In October 1976, John made his official debut under the stage name ‘Johnny Cougar’, launching his very first album, “Chestnut Street Incident”. While the album was a commercial failure, it was all he needed to get a head start. Despite being briefly dropped by MCA Records afterward, John caught the eye of Billy Gaff, manager of Rod Stewart, and he was signed to Riva Records. He stayed in London for nearly a year, during which he honed his skills, recorded, promoted, and toured behind his second album, A Biography (1978).
