Mumbaiâs ocean is drowning in plastic. And weâre running out of places to hide it.
Every year, around 5 million kg of plastic drains out of Mumbai into the Arabian Sea. Most of it stays there. This time, it didn’t.
We put 1,500+ volunteers on one shoreline for a single day and pulled 18,000 kg of marine plastic off the sand. But the real story started after the bags were full. We followed that waste into a recycling facility, watched it get washed, sorted and remade, and then saw it walk back into classrooms as benches for children who needed them. That’s the whole chain. Trash, to truck, to bench, to kid. Nobody cut a single step out of it.
This is The Better India’s Civic Sense Revolution and it doesn’t end at the beach.
