Paapa will play Severus Snape in the new Harry Potter series for HBO, carrying on the legacy of the late Alan Rickman, who played the first on-screen iteration of the character between 2001 and 2011.

Shockingly, the actor has received racist abuse and death threats following the casting announcement, telling USA Today: “If I look at Instagram, I will see somebody saying, ‘I’m going to come to your house and kill you.’”

Despite having to endure backlash before his character has even appeared on screen, Paapa said the experience had only strengthened his commitment to the role, stating: “The abuse fuels me.”
