Inside the Mets’ unlikely discovery of Carson Benge — who is proving the ‘exit-velocity psychos’ wrong

PORT ST. LUCIE — The Mets have opened the door for Carson Benge to make the Opening Day roster.

Whether he takes it will likely be determined over the next few weeks, as Benge, who turned 23 in January, adjusts to facing major league-level pitching after just one full season in the minors.

“He kept getting better last year and seemed up to any challenge the Mets put in front of him,’’ a National League scout said of the lefty-swinging Benge this spring. “And so far, he’s looked the part here. But there’s a lot that goes into a decision like that and only they’ll know if he’s ready.”

Benge has been high on the Mets’ radar for longer than just about any team — well before they selected him with the 19th pick in the 2024 draft.
