A child is fighting for life in hospital and another was seriously injured after their mother allegedly failed to give way, leading to a car crash in Melbourne’s east on Thursday night.

An 11-year-old girl is in a critical condition and four-year-old boy suffered severe but not non-life-threatening injuries after a Toyota Corolla and Nissan Skyline collided at the intersection of Wallace Road and High Street Road in Wantirna South.

The driver of the Corolla, a 38-year-old Knoxfield woman, was taken to hospital with minor injuries while the fourth passenger, a 38-year-old Knoxfield man, was uninjured.

The occupants of the Nissan, two 18-year-old men, stopped at the scene. An Ambulance spokesperson said the teenagers were taken to Maroondah Hospital for minor injuries.

Detective Sergeant Stephen Hill from Victoria Police’s Major Collisions Investigations Unit said it appeared the 38-year-old woman failed to give way to the Nissan.

“I’m sure it’ll be tragic for the families,” he said. The officer said police would also be reviewing if the children were properly restrained in the back seat of the car.

The 11-year-old girl the four-year-old boy were transported to the Royal Children’s Hospital.

A spokesperson for the hospital said: “The 11-year-old is in a serious condition, and the four-year-old is in a stable condition.”

Police are still investigating the incident and have appealed to the public for dashcam footage.
