Bad Bunny, real name Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, is set to perform the halftime show of the Super Bowl on Sunday but his performace has already been met with criticism

A goof friend of Bad Bunny has reassured English-speaking NFL fans can still ‘vibe with’ Bad Bunny ‘s Super Bowl show despite the language barrier.

Bad Bunny, real name Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, is set to perform the halftime show in Santa Clara on Sunday, five months after his unveiling as the musical act for Super Bowl LX sparked uproar. The Puerto Rican singer, 31, made history last week at the Grammys for being the first artist to win album of the year for a record sung entirely in Spanish.

On Sunday, he will be at the centre of one of the most watched broadcasts in the world, performing at the Super Bowl half-time show in Santa Clara, California. Given that virtually all of his songs are in Spanish the NFL’s decision to select the Puerto Rican rapper has left thousands of Americans furious.

Yet according to his good friend Colombian singer J Balvin, who is being tipped to appear as a surprise guest during the show, fans do not need to understand the lyrics to enjoy the music.

When quizzed about concerns over Bad Bunny’s performance he told TMZ : “I learned and grew up listening to hip-hop,’ I didn’t know what they were saying. I would just vibe with it. They just gotta jump on the flavor, that’s all they gotta do.”

Bad Bunny admitted he is struggling to sleep in the build-up to tonight’s big performance. Earlier this week he said: “Thinking about the Super Bowl at 4am, that’s what I’ve been doing. It’s been hard to not. I’m happy but I’m just processing, taking one day at a time. I just try to take it easy. Wake up, work out, drink my coffee, try not to think too much about it.

“Last night I couldn’t sleep, I was thinking about it. I want to think it’s 13 minutes of doing what I love, what I like. I know I’m gonna have fun.”

Ahead of taking the stage, Bad Bunny’s appointment has already been met with criticism, including from Mr Trump, for his outspoken opposition to US immigration policies. It is expected that he will make some form of political statement following his call for US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (Ice) officers to leave cities alone and opt for love during his Grammy acceptance speech last week.

Ice officers have been sent to US cities as part of Mr Trump’s mass deportation initiative, and have come under strong criticism over their aggressive approach, most notably in Minnesota and Minneapolis, where about 2,000 federal agents have been deployed.
