Dawson’s Creek star James Van Der Beek made a big decision just weeks before his death as he tried to create future stability for his family
James Van Der Beek tried to provide his family with security just a month before his death. The Dawson’s Creek star died earlier this month at the age of 48. He had been diagnosed with colorectal cancer two years earlier. As his health condition deteriorated, the actor bought their family home they had been renting.
The property in Texas, which boasts 36 acres of land, was bought for $4.8million (£3.5million) by the star. The family had moved from Los Angeles to Spicewood, Texas, in 2020. They had opted to lease the property initially, but it seems like now James has helped create stability for his wife and kids.

James was a dad to six kids – Olivia, 15, Joshua, 13, Annabel, 12, Emilia, nine, Gwendolyn, seven, and Jeremiah, four – with his wife, Kimberly. The Van Der Beeks are said to have used an LLC managed by a California attorney, according to Realtor.com. The outlet shows the home was bought for $4.76 million in an off-market deal on January 9. The home boasts a number of cabins, a pool and a large back yard.
James spent the final weeks of his life surrounded by his family and friends in a hospice. Friends close to the star revealed his tragic final days before after news of his death.
They explained how the actor grew very weak near the end of his life. Speaking to Daily Mail earlier this week, a source said that despite his public optimism, James realised time was running out.
The insider said: “James was on hospice for several weeks and he was rail thin when he passed. He was mostly in bed because he was very weak, and he was not eating.”
They continued to say that it had become increasingly hard to watch his deterioration near the end. “He was in hospice, they held his hand and were there for him, of course,” they added.
James’ death came weeks after he had shared an empowering New Year ‘s Resolution message. At the time, he said: “Why are we celebrating a New Year in the dead of winter? The time to celebrate a new beginning, and a new you, and a new resolution, is the spring.”
A GoFundMe page was launched following his death. The page, which quickly reached over £1million, said funds would help the family with “essential living expenses”.
The description on the page reads: “In the wake of this loss, Kimberly and the children are facing an uncertain future. The costs of James’s medical care and the extended fight against cancer have left the family out of funds.
“They are working hard to stay in their home and to ensure the children can continue their education and maintain some stability during this incredibly difficult time. The support of friends, family, and the wider community will make a world of difference as they navigate the road ahead.”
Among those donating included high-profile pals of the stars. They included filmmaker Steven Spielberg and actress Zoe Saldana.
