Dawson’s Creek star James Van Der Beek, who passed away on 11 February from colorectal cancer, stars as evil pastor in The Gates
James Van Der Beek’s final film performance will be seen in The Gates. The 48-year-old actor, who died on 11 February following a battle with colorectal cancer, takes on the role of a sinister pastor called Jacob, with his character unveiled in the newly released trailer for the thriller.
In the clip, James’s character proclaims: “I have been called upon to lead this community, and those boys seek to destroy us. Find them, and let God’s will be done.”
Threatening three characters who find themselves in danger during the film at gunpoint, he later warns: “You’ve seen what happens when people get in my way.” Director John Burr helmed the thriller, which is scheduled for cinema release on 13 March.

The plot centres on three mates who stumble upon a murder whilst driving through a gated community and soon become targets of a menacing pastor, portrayed by James, along with the neighbourhood’s dubious inhabitants. The trio must confront him in order to make it out alive. The cast features Mason Gooding, Algee Smith, Keith Powers and Brad Leland alongside James.
John Burr both developed and wrote the screenplay for the project. Gary Glushon, Ross Kohn and Nancy Leopardi serve as producers. James rose to fame playing the lead character Dawson Leery in Dawson’s Creek. His film credits included Varsity Blues and The Rules of Attraction, whilst he went on to star in TV shows including Mercy and Don’t Trust the B—- in Apt. 23.
Supporters have flooded social media with tributes following the release of The Gates trailer. One mourner posted: “Sad to think this is probably James Van Der Beek’s final performance ever. R.I.P.” Another admirer commented: “I’m watching this for James Van Der Beek. R.I.P, Dawson.”
Prior to his passing, James had completed filming a recurring part in the upcoming Amazon Prime Video series Elle. Following James’ death, close friends set up a GoFundMe page to help support his wife and six children.
The fundraising appeal has collected nearly £2 million. James’ portrayal of Dawson Leery established him as an iconic figure of late-1990s youth television. However, despite his film work, his family faced overwhelming medical expenses from his cancer treatment. Steven Spielberg and his wife, Kate Capshaw, donated $25,000; American filmmaker Jon M. Chu has also donated $10,000.
Meanwhile, actress Zoe Saldana has pledged to donate $2,500 every month. James’ wife, Kimberly said on GoFundMe: “James Van Der Beek was a beloved husband, father, and friend who touched the lives of everyone around him. After a long and courageous battle with cancer, James passed away on February 11, 2026, leaving behind his devoted wife, Kimberly, and their six wonderful children. Throughout his illness, the family faced not only emotional challenges but also significant financial strain as they did everything possible to support James and provide for his care.
“In the wake of this loss, Kimberly and the children are facing an uncertain future. The costs of James’s medical care and the extended fight against cancer have left the family out of funds.
“They are working hard to stay in their home and to ensure the children can continue their education and maintain some stability during this incredibly difficult time. The support of friends, family, and the wider community will make a world of difference as they navigate the road ahead.” Prior to James’ death, he also sold his Dawson’s Creek and Varsity Blues memorabilia to fund his treatment. Fans were able to get their hands on the outfit he wore in the first episode of Dawson’s Creek, which was expected to sell for up to £3,000. They were also able to purchase the necklace Dawson gave to on-screen girlfriend Joey, for prom, which was estimated to go for around £40,000.
