Loose Women’s Janet Street-Porter has admitted that she and her “crazy” ex-husband went to marriage counselling in an ill-fated attempt to fix things before they parted ways
Janet Street-Porter has revealed that she and her “crazy” ex-husband had to go to counselling. The broadcast legend, 79, recently got married for the fifth time, but just days after tying the knot with partner Peter Spanton, she has addressed the tumultuous nature of one of her previous marriages.
The former I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here! star was back in her usual seat on Loose Women alongside Ruth Langsford, Coleen Nolan and former Strictly Come Dancing professional Oti Mabuse when they were discussing the idea of trying to get advice from an outside source when the marriage goes awry.
She said: “I did try marriage counselling when I married the crazy person, the fourth person. I went to the marriage counsellor, she saw us separately, and she asked to see me again, and she told me it wasn’t gonna work. And she was so right!”

Janet was initially married to Tim Street-Porter from 1967 until 1975, then to Tony Elliott for the next two years. Her third marriage was to documentary maker Frank Cvitanovich from 1979 until 1981, and then she tied the knot with David Sorkin in a Las Vegas wedding in 1997.
At the time, the former newspaper editor was 50, and her then-husband was 27, but they parted ways just two years later. The two got married only a few weeks after meeting at a party held by Neil Tennant and regretted it immediately but had to wait a year to get divorced.
Explaining on Loose Women, she said: “My first three marriages ended in very amicable divorces. It was only number four that I’ve airbrushed out. That was a bit of a midlife crisis and a cry for help.”
Shortly after the marriage ended, she described to The Guardian how the end had come about when “he squirted her with salad cream during yet another argument.”
The frank admission comes just weeks after Janet announced that she and Peter Spanton, whom she had been in a relationship with since 1999, had quietly tied the knot. She sent a video message to Loose Women earlier this month to reveal the news. Janet stood with her now husband and their dog, Badger, as she said: “Hi everyone, I’ve been keeping a big secret. It’s my big news for everyone. Peter and me, and Badger, got married on Saturday, so there you are.
“I finally did it. I waited to the last for the best. See ya!” The Loose Women panel, made up of Kaye Adams, Coronation Street‘s Sue Cleaver, Brenda Edwards and ex-EastEnders actress Nadia Sawalha, all applauded in delight when watching the video clip.
Upon learning the news, Brenda screamed out loud: “Congratulations Janet.” While Kaye said: “Husband number five!” To which Brenda replied: “It doesn’t matter, she’s got happiness – stop counting the numbers.” Former Strictly star Kaye then added: “She looks content, radiant and happy.”
Upon her in-person return to the ITV lunchtime chat show, Janet explained that she was so “nervous” before the big day because she regretted the last wedding so much. She said: “I was nervous. I got myself in a complete state the day before. I was shaking.
“I’d messed up the last one. That was a really, really bad mistake. It was bad for my friends. It was bad for me. I don’t know about him, but it was a horrible, horrible, stupid mistake, and I didn’t want to do that again.” “I didn’t want to do anything embarrassing that I would regret,’ she admitted. ‘I didn’t want to make fun of Peter. I wanted it to be lovely for him, because he hasn’t been married before. He’s managed to avoid it,” she explained.
Janet also said it was difficult because she had to use her previous married name when she tied the knot. She said: “Unfortunately, another factor that made Janet nervous was the fact that she had to tie the knot using her last married name.
“I had to be married in my last married name, which I don’t really want to say on air, because it still upsets me so much. But nobody spotted it. When we got to the registry office, there was no one there in the car park. It was brilliant. It was empty. We went in and there was this great big room with chairs for like 100 people. It was all over in 10 minutes. We are absolutely thrilled.”
