Janhvi Kapoor’s cobalt Patola lehenga is Indian maximalism at its finest

‘Tis the season of maximalist Indianwear and Janhvi Kapoor channelled it effortlessly in a Jigya Patel ensemble. Styled by Megan Concessio for wedding festivities, the look captured bright colour, intricate craft and layered ornamentation.

The ensemble featured a Patola cobalt-blue base with intricate patterns, its traditional geometry interpreted through vivid threadwork and glinting embellishments. The blouse came with richly embroidered sleeves, mirror work and was finished with tasselled edges.

The voluminous ghaghra continued this intricate surface story, its borders framed by Parsi gara-inspired floral embroidery interspersed with clusters of Basra pearls that added a layer of tactility. The blue dupatta extended the Patola pattern: its border lined with metallic coins, while panels carried embroidered Shreenathji motifs surrounded by elaborate threadwork, enclosed with a border with long beaded tassels that swayed with movement.

Draped across the other shoulder was the contrast pink dupatta that introduced a striking counterpoint with distinct botanical embroidery, finished with the same coin detailing that tied the look together.

Accessories added another artisanal layer. Kapoor carried the Agira purse by Surabhi Didwania, a silver box-shaped minaudière adorned with turquoise and blush gemstones arranged in a mosaic of colour. Her jewellery, by Tribe Amrapali, continued this gemstone-on-silver vocabulary: a sculptural choker paired with matching earrings, turquoise-studded and oxidised rings, a broad silver cuff, a delicate nose ring and ornate silver hair brooches by Silverstreak pinned into her braid.

Janhvi Kapoor’s beauty look stayed warm with kohl-rimmed eyes, fanned lashes and a velvet-matte pink lip anchored by a small bindi.

From Vogue’s fashion desk:

“The star in this look is the embroidered dupatta, taking a breather from maximalist Indian looks. Lets highlight a hand embroidered dupatta with a plain tone-on-tone dress. Work with a slip dress and wrap the dupatta in a stole like manner across you. Wear your hair up in a messy chic look and finish with minimal jewellery and open toe heels. An ode to the 90s simplicity,” says Vogue India fashion associate Divya Balakrishnan.
