Actor Jayasurya is set to lead Operation Tral, an upcoming action thriller that marks the directorial debut of composer Ratheesh Vega. The project was officially announced on Monday with a title reveal teaser, giving audiences a first glimpse into a film rooted in real-life events.

A composer steps behind the camera

Ratheesh Vega, who has also written the screenplay, is best known for his work as a music director in Malayalam cinema. His compositions in films such as Cocktail, Beautiful, and Run Babby Run have earned him recognition over the years. With Operation Tral, he now takes a major creative leap by stepping into the director’s chair while also handling the film’s music.

The film is being produced by Joby George Thadathil under the banner of Goodwill Entertainments. The makers have announced that the film is being planned as a Christmas release, with a theatrical rollout scheduled for December.

Positioned as a high-intensity thriller, the film promises a blend of military action and grounded storytelling inspired by real events that unfolded in the conflict-hit region of Jammu and Kashmir.

A real-life military encounter at the centre

At the heart of Operation Tral lies a significant encounter between the Indian Army and militants in Tral, a town in Jammu and Kashmir that has witnessed several counter-insurgency operations over the years. The film draws inspiration from one such high-stakes operation, attempting to recreate the tension, strategy and human drama behind a real military mission.

The makers are planning an extensive shooting schedule that spans several locations across India. Filming will take place in Jammu, Pulwama, and Kashmir to capture the authenticity of the region where the events unfolded. The production will also travel to Ladakh and Uttarakhand, including locations such as Nainital and Dehradun.

In addition, portions of the film will be shot in Delhi as well as cities across South India, including Kochi, Coimbatore, Malappuram, Ponnani and Palakkad. The wide range of locations hints at a narrative that moves across different terrains and operational settings.

On the technical front, cinematography will be handled by Najose, while editing duties will be taken care of by Shafeeque V B. Ratheesh Vega will also compose the film’s songs and background score, continuing his musical association with cinema even as he ventures into direction.

The makers are aiming for a wider reach beyond Malayalam audiences. Apart from its original Malayalam version, Operation Tral will also be dubbed into Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Hindi, allowing the film to connect with viewers across multiple language markets.

Jayasurya’s busy slate continues

For Jayasurya, Operation Tral adds another interesting project to an already diverse filmography. Known for seamlessly moving between commercial entertainers and performance-driven roles, the actor has consistently experimented with genres in recent years.

Before the release of Operation Tral, audiences will next see him in Aadu 3: One Last Ride – Part 1. Directed by Midhun Manuel Thomas, the film marks the first chapter of the third instalment in the immensely popular Aadu franchise. The fantasy comedy is slated for a worldwide release on March 19.

With Operation Tral, Jayasurya appears to be stepping into a very different space, trading the irreverent humour of the Aadu series for the intensity of a military thriller. If the premise is anything to go by, the film could offer the actor another opportunity to showcase his versatility in a genre that thrives on tension and realism.

As Ratheesh Vega prepares for his directorial debut, the film will also be closely watched to see how the composer translates his storytelling instincts into a full-fledged cinematic experience.
