Jessie Buckley has been tipped to win an Oscar for her role in Hamnet 18 years after missing out on playing Nancy in Oliver in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s BBC talent show I’d Do Anything
Oscar nominee Jessie Buckley narrowly missed out on the opportunity to play Nancy in the theatre adaption of Oliver back in 2008. But now, the Oscar nominee for Best Actress has clearly placed her disappointment in her rear view mirror, as she is set to make history as the first Irish actress to win her coveted category.
The 36 year old star has already won a Bafta, a Golden Globe and a Critics Choice Award for her portrayal of Agnes, known as Anne who was William Shakespeare’s wife.
Hamnet is them film adaption of Maggie O Farrell’s Hamnet and it shows the struggle the couple faced after losing their son. Jessie has previously said that the making of the highly acclaimed film tapped into her need to start a family of her own.
In an recent interview with British Vogue, she explained that playing someone who was suffering with the grief of losing a child tapped a “deep need”. Jessie walked down the aisle in 2023 and welcomed their first child last year.
Earlier this year, the award-winning actress caused a stir when she said that she did not like cats. While on Jimmy Fallon she made a point of clearing up the “misconception” that she did not like the animals.
Growing up Jessie spent five years studying at an all girls convent school before auditioning for the BBC talent show I’d Do Anything, at the age of 17.
Jessie made it to the final but missed out on winning the role to Coronation Street star Jodie Pregner. In a desperate bid to earn her spot as an acclaimed actress, Jessie had spent years studying to become one of the most adored actresses of her time. She learnt drama at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts and graduated with a BA, in 2013.
She kickstarted her career in the same year performing at Shakespeare’s Globe production of The Tempest before starring alongside Jude Law in the production of Henry V.
She then ventured into TV by appearing in Tolstoy’s War and Peace in 2016. Jessie played Marya Bolkonskaya, and made her film debut a year later in Michael Pearce’s psychological thriller Beast alongside Emma actor Johnny Flynn.
She then went on to star in films including Wild Rose in 2018 , where she played a challenged single mother of two, who is also a convicted criminal.
Her character Rose Lynn, who was raised in Glasgow, tries to follow her desire of becoming a country singer. On the back of her portrayal, she was recognised on a national level and awarded a Bafta for Best Actress.
