Former Little Mix star Jesy Nelson has revealed her heartbreak as she found herself separated from her twins Ocean Jade and Story Monroe after their birth
Jesy Nelson has revealed the heartbreaking situation that left her away from her babies just after giving birth. The former Little Mix star, 34, became a mum to twins Ocean Jade and Story Monroe last year.
Sadly, the tots were diagnosed with SMA type one, with the prognosis meaning the now-nine-month-old children may not live beyond the age of two. The Mirror have joined Jesy in calling for all UK babies to be checked for SMA at birth.
The genetic neuromuscular disease causes progressive muscle weakness and wasting due to motor neurone loss. And now, as she tries to share awareness of the condition, Jesy has revealed the awful moment she was forced to be away from her kids.

Jesy, who recently split from the children’s father Zion Foster, 26, explained how she she remained in hospital for three months before her babies were born due to TTTS. She was told that the children could arrive at any point, meaning she had to remain in hospital.
When they were born via C-section, Jesy admits they were “so tiny”. Speaking to Jamie Laing on his Great Company podcast, Jesy said she feels she was robbed of the experience of giving birth after needing to be put to sleep for the birth.
She said: “I feel like, in my whole pregnancy, everything was taken from me. All the things you’re supposed to enjoy, they were all taken from me. I was so excited to see the birth of my children and I didn’t get that either.”
And she admitted her first sighting of the tots was through a plastic box with tubes. She wasn’t able to lift her children for another day, something she said felt unnatural, especially when they were crying.
With the twins remaining in hospital for a month, Jesy was sent back to a local hospital. Sadly, it left her separated from them for the first week and she said it was “one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to go through”.
“Every time I would come in, I would have to see another woman hold and look after my baby and it was just heartbreaking for me,” she said. “I felt like they don’t even know I’m their mum. They they’ve been taken from me, and now, every time they are picked up, they’re picked up by a different woman.
“I’ll never forget when I walked in and one of the ladies was feeding them with a bottle for the first time, and I just felt like I just wanted to die because that’s my job. I can’t even tell you how painful that was.
Jesy’s journey is set to be shown on a documentary series for Amazon. The show will launch on Prime Video on February 13.
The Mirror is campaigning for a simple £5 check for SMA to be added to the NHS newborn heel prick test – so babies can be treated and effectively cured before irreversible nerve damage is done in the first weeks of life. Most developed nations already test for SMA at birth.
