Absolutely Fabulous star Joanna Lumley is set to turn 80 in a matter of weeks and has been reflecting on her career and what she plans to do on her big day

Dame Joanna Lumley, 79, stands as one of Britain’s most beloved actresses, boasting an illustrious career spanning several decades across television and film.

The Absolutely Fabulous icon has graced the screen in productions including The Wolf of Wall Street, James and the Giant Peach, Ella Enchanted, Coronation Street, and On Her Majesty’s Secret Service. She’s also scheduled to feature in an upcoming episode of Channel 4‘s Car SOS.

As she nears her milestone 80th birthday on May 1, Joanna has increasingly reflected on her remarkable journey in the entertainment industry, reports the Express.

Born in India in 1946, The i reports that Joanna travelled to Britain in 1954 aboard HMT Empire Windrush with her family, later pursuing modelling after being rejected by the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA).

Discussing her upcoming birthday celebrations and her feelings surrounding this significant occasion, Joanna confessed she has been claiming to be 80 for several years already and shared her likely plans for the day.

Speaking to the Telegraph, Joanna expressed her delight at remaining professionally active and suggested she would probably be working on her 80th birthday.

Conveying her enthusiasm about the approaching milestone, she remarked: “It’s extraordinary, isn’t it? I’ve been saying I’m 80 for the last two or three years because I thought I was, but I wasn’t.

“People are making a big hoo-ha about this 80, as if I’m somehow going to be different, as if some huge precipice is reached. I’ll be working on my birthday. I’m thrilled and I’m touched that people have remembered and think about it more than I do.”

This marks yet another occasion where Joanna has opened up about ageing and her evolving perspective on life.

Speaking to The i earlier this year about mortality, she expressed admiration for a quote from 19th-century philanthropist Andrew Carnegie regarding wealth and death.

Joanna explained: “Andrew Carnegie, the great philanthropist, said: ‘To die rich is to die disgraced.’ That’s fabulous. Think of it. What do you do with it all stacked up in banks? Get rid of it. Also, nature abhors a vacuum.”

During the same conversation, Joanna also shared her personal philosophy for staying mentally sharp and energised. She remarked: “Having no certainty keeps you vibrant and engaged. If you’re always trying something new.”

Beyond contemplating life’s bigger questions, Joanna remains actively involved in her career, featuring on various programmes including the previously mentioned Car SOS, Wednesday, and a Sky travel series in which she explores Caribbean destinations including Cuba and Haiti.
