TV presenter Julia Bradbury, 55, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2021 and had a mastectomy to remove a 6cm tumour – she’s now in remission and shares her wellness advice
Julia Bradbury’s world was turned upside down after she found a lump in her breast in the summer of 2021. She was soon diagnosed with cancer and had a mastectomy to remove the 6cm tumour later that year.
Thankfully, the 55-year-old TV presenter, who has fronted shows such as Countryfile and Railway Walks, is now in remission. Following her cancer ordeal, Julia re-evaluated her lifestyle choices and decided a sugar-free diet and frequent doses of the great outdoors should be the way forward.
She says: “‘Nature snacking’ is grabbing those moments when you can. Most of us lead busy lives, and a lot of us don’t have a lot of time free during the day.”

“However, just accessing nature and understanding it can make a fundamental difference to your health is important. Sometimes that can be as simple as opening the window, looking up at the sky and taking in a few gentle, deep breaths.”
She credits her Derbyshire-born father Michael for instilling her love of a good, old stomp in the countryside, often being joined by son Zephyr, 14, and twin daughters Zena and Xanthe, 10, who she shares with TV producer Gerard Cunningham.
Julia says: “My dad took me walking when I was a little girl in the Peak District and it’s something that I bring to life in all my television programmes.”
Julia first rose to fame in the mid-1990s when she hosted such shows as Top Gear and GMTV. Two years ago, she fronted Julia Bradbury’s Irish Journey on Channel 4, which was a nod to her birthplace of Dublin. And her self-titled Wonders of the Frozen South will premiere on ITV next Sunday.
The programme follows Julia on a 23-day voyage as she navigates the Southern Ocean, travelling via the Falkland Islands and South Georgia to Antarctica, giving an insight into life on an expedition ship. And the wellness guru is keen to pass on her sense of adventure.
She says: “I walk the kids to school the long way, the tree lined way, so they get a bit of nature in the morning. I walk my dog more than I need to, because I want to get nature snacks in two or three times a day.
“People who spend time outside tend to be happier and healthier. It’s not just about being rich or being able to access expensive things. One of the most important things is nature. It is free and it’s something that has been a passion of mine for my whole life.”
In her latest book Hack Yourself Healthy, Julia highlights the theory that living healthily leads to a better sex life. And she believes making more mindful choices now will pay off in the long run.
She says: “The question we need to ask ourselves is do we want to live longer, and I think most people would say, ‘Yes’. So, when you get into your 70s, 80s and 90s, do you want to be able to walk the dog? Do you want to be able to walk up upstairs? Do you want to be able to have sex?
“It’s not just life-span, it’s health-span. It’s being here in our 80s and 90s and really showing up.”
Julia Bradbury’s Wonders of the Frozen South starts next Sunday at 12.45pm on ITV1.
