Kacey Musgraves Returns With ‘Middle Of Nowhere’, Opens Up About Her Long Break From Spotlight

Country-pop star, Kacey Musgraves is dominating the headlines after announcing her upcoming album, Middle Of Nowhere. Before its release on May 1, 2026, the Grammy-winning singer had already left her fans excited about her next musical chapter. Although Kacey has remained active in the music scene, she has stepped away from the spotlight for some time and now calls the album a personal “return”. Here’s what led the singer away from the public eye. 

Why did Kacey Musgraves take a break from the spotlight? 

Kacey Musgraves last toured for her album, Deeper Well in 2024, and since then, she has lived a low-key life. But now in the press release for her new album, the singer revealed that she spent the time after her tour self-reflecting and creatively resetting for her future work. For those unaware, Kacey spent the time living a quiet life away from the constant pressures of fame. In her words: 

“I became so at ease with being in the ‘middle of nowhere’ in many senses and sitting in the discomfort of the undefined. I had a lot of time for creative ambling and leaning into myself in different ways; horses, humor, writing with my early collaborators again, and living out my very simple, inspired life between Texas, Tennessee, and Mexico.”

Furthermore, Kacey explained that she entered her “longest single period” of her adult life to rediscover who she was outside of relationships and public expectations. Instead of immediately making new music, she decided to slow down her music-making and spend more time understanding her interests and reconnecting with her surroundings. Moreover, in another interview with NPR, the singer admitted that she gradually began to experience being alone and not being defined by anyone, which eventually led to a new album. Sharing her views, Kacey said:

“I think it’s gonna be really tempting for a lot of people to say that it’s a return for me. I agree with some of that. I’ve never taken a stand saying I’m leaving the country. It’s a huge part of me. I don’t think I could shake it if I even wanted to.”

Kacey Musgraves’s upcoming album, titled Middle Of Nowhere, has been described as a project inspired by her roots in Texas. In fact, the title refers to a place in her hometown, Golden, Texas, which reads, “Somewhere in the middle of nowhere.” According to a new Rolling Stone report, the album is a mix of traditional country sounds with multiple influences,, including bluegrass, folk, and regional styles like Norteno and Zydeco. 

The album will include 13 songs. At the same time, it will include a variety of high-profile collaborations and appearances by country and folk artists such as Willie Nelson, Miranda Lambert, Billy Strings, and Gregory Alan Isakov. Alongside this, it will be Kacey’s new collaboration with Lost Highway Records, following her career launch with the label in 2011.
