The Princess and Prince of Wales wore similar outfits as they attended the BAFTAs at the Royal Festival Hall in London this afternoon – and there is a good reason for it

Kate Middleton and Prince William appeared to send a hidden message as they arrived at the BAFTAs together this afternoon. The Princess and Prince of Wales didn’t pose for photos on the red carpet of the event at the Royal Festival Hall in London. However, they were seen smiling while entering the venue following a wave of headlines about the Royal Family this week.

For the occasion, Princess Kate, 44, donned a stunning pink Gucci gown she had previously worn in 2019 to the 100 Women in Finance dinner gala, which benefited her Mentally Healthy Schools project. Meanwhile, her 43-year-old husband William, the heir to the throne, wore a white shirt paired with black trousers, a purple velvet jacket and a black bow tie.

The pair appeared to send a message of unity by wearing a similar colour, as Catherine’s dress featured a delicate belt around the waist the same shade as William’s jacket. Fashion expert Amber Graafland previously revealed that the couple, who often wear coordinated outfits with their children, don’t do it simply to look good – but because it’s also a way for them to showcase a united front.

The expert told The Sun: “When Kate, Prince William and their children wear coordinated outfits it’s about more than just looking good. By complementing each other, and sticking to a colour theme, they are showcasing a united front.

“It’s a technique Prince William and Princes Kate use to show in tune they are when they attend official engagements together, and they also deploy it with their children.

“Adept at using their clothing to convey coded message, the Waleses know that by presenting a refined and harmonious image they convey a close-knit family with a strong bond. It also makes them instantly recognisable on the world stage.”

The couple’s joint appearance at the BAFTAs today marks the first time the Waleses stepped out together since the arrest of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor earlier this week. Their presence is key for the awards ceremony, with William having served as the fifth president of the organisation since 2010 – and he is due to present an awards at the event.

On Saturday, Kate wore an England Rugby scarf to watch the team take on Ireland in the Guinness Men’s Six Nations at the Allianz Stadium Twickenham. She was pictured chatting with injured England player Fin Baxter and RFU president Deborah Griffin in the seats before the game, in her first public appearance since Andrew’s arrest.

King Charles‘ younger brother and William’s uncle Andrew was arrested by police and held for 11 hours on Thursday over allegations he sent sensitive government information to the late financier Jeffrey Epstein. The scandal has rocked the Royal Family, though William and Kate remain popular standard-bearers for the monarchy.

The monarch has also declared his support for the investigation and it is understood that he has given his permission for staff to hand over sensitive documents and files relating to his brother’s work as the UK’s trade envoy. The 77-year-old head of state gave the go ahead for courtiers to give police access to the information as they continue to probe Mountbatten-Windsor.

Sources say the move supports his statement regarding his brother’s arrest last week in which he said: “We have said we will cooperate fully and wholeheartedly.” According to The Observer, the palace declined to comment on whether it was expecting police search teams inside the king’s official residence, where Mountbatten-Windsor had a private office and apartment until 2022.
