The Princess of Wales described Meghan Markle as ‘friendly’ during their first meeting but also had a second way to describe the experience, Mirror royal editor Russell Myers reveals in his new book

The Princess of Wales described her first meeting with Meghan Markle as ‘friendly’ but also delivered another surprise verdict. A new biography, William and Catherine: The Intimate Inside Story, by The Mirror’s royal editor Russell Myers, reveals that Prince Harry plucked up the courage to introduce his now wife to his family after the story broke they were dating, with Meghan charming the late Queen and Prince William at first.

The book says that when Meghan then met Kate, she found her somewhat over-friendly with a “touch of California”. The book is is the first joint biography of the Prince and Princess of Wales in more than a decade and also highlights the couple’s resilience and dedication in the face of adversity, from the relentless media scrutiny and controversies of their 2022 Caribbean tour, to the shock cancer diagnoses of both the princess and King Charles.

Behind the scenes’ context of the prince and princess’ reaction to the departure from royal life by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, the forming of the ‘Cambridge way’ and the death of Queen Elizabeth II, is also revealed for the first time.

It also reveals how Kate had less interest than William in trying to stop the Duke and Duchess of Sussex from walking away from royal life, believing Prince Harry quitting his role was “inevitable”.

Despite the Prince of Wales being intensely saddened at his younger brother’s decision to leave the royal family, the princess was less interested in attempting to persuade Harry and Meghan to stay, it can be revealed. Myers also tells how the princess believed Harry would want more than being a “bit-part player” in the monarchy amid his fundamental differences with her husband.

In further revelations, the future queen eventually realised she “could do no more to bring the brothers together” – despite previously being a “voice of reason” throughout the disintegration of their relationship.

The biography, available to pre-order now, has over the past four days in a Mirror serialisation revealed how Prince William wanted his disgraced uncle Andrew banished from royal life immediately after his disastrous BBC Newsnight interview in 2019.

It also unearthed the true story on how William and Kate felt about the Sussexes’ departure from royal life and provided never-before-told context on how the Princess of Wales dealt with her shock cancer diagnosis.

The book also highlights the Prince and Princess of Wales’s life from their earliest meeting at St Andrews University to the current day and how they have shaped their vision for a modern monarchy and its safe continuation at a time of extreme change and turmoil.

Myers said: “I’ve spent almost a decade following The Prince and Princess of Wales as part of the Royal pack and have always believed there’s so much more to the couple than the spectacle reveals. The result of this biography is a truly intimate portrait of William and Catherine; providing not just unparalleled insight into who they are as individuals, but seismic revelations about them as a couple and the world they inhabit.

“This biography moves beyond the headlines as it explores love, resilience, and their journey together as they navigate their public duties amid this unprecedented era.”
