Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of Today Show co-anchor, Savannah Guthrie, was allegedly abducted from her Tucson, Arizona, home on the midnight of January 31, 2026 (ET). Through 17 days of investigation, the officials have found several clues, including blood trails, four ransom notes, gloves of a masked intruder of Nancy’s house and also doorcam video of the same person. Recently, officials arrested two individuals, Kayla Noel Day and Luke Anthony Daley, who were suspected of being connected to Nancy Guthrie’s case. Amid that, details of their criminal past surfaced.

A screenshot of an unverified report has been circulating online, which includes an alleged account of Kayla and Luke’s 2025 crime. According to the report, on May 15, 2025, Marana police officials observed Luke driving a car in an unusual and suspicious manner. They kept a watch on the vehicle and while it was parked at a Walmart store, an official “observed dr*g paraphernalia in plain view”. Following that, the car was searched, and a duffel bag on the passenger seat was found that held a 9mm AR pistol and a loaded magazine.

Kayla allegedly had a backpack in her possession that contained a for-sale amount of fentanyl pills and 17 suboxone strips. Officers also found the captioned USD 1,366, and after going through Kayla and Luke’s cell phones, they found messages that confirmed that the duo were actively involved in drug sales. As a result, they had been indicted on dr*g trafficking charges after a hearing in Pima County Superior Court case. Following the surfacing of Kayla and Luke’s alleged past crime, the public speculated that the duo’s recent February 2026 arrest was due to links with an international dr*g-cartel who might have been behind Nancy Guthrie’s kidnapping. However, the theory remains unverified.

Speculation surrounding Kayla Noel Day‘s alleged link to the Guthrie family began on platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and Reddit after reports of former’s detention emerged on February 12, 2026 (ET). Journalist, JLR shared a video on his YouTube wherein a man, claiming to know the Guthries, told him that Kayla is the daughter of Nancy’s sister, making her Savannah Guthrie‘s cousin. The source alleged that Nancy’s sister and Kayla’s mother is named Penny Guthrie, whose maiden surname might be Day as most of her relatives were Days. Some contradictory social media rumours indicated that Penny might actually be Savannah’s aunt, not her mother, but her deceased father’s side.

Notably, the claims remain unverified, and neither law enforcement nor official reports have confirmed any familial relationship between Nancy Guthrie and Kayla Noel Day. Some online users even noted that Nancy doesn’t have a sister named Penny and that the entire narrative about Nancy and Kayla was false. Another theory suggests that there is indeed a familial connection between the detained woman and Nancy, but in an indirect manner.

An X (formerly Twitter) user wrote, “For everyone saying Kayla Day is not related to Nancy Guthrie. Ann Prichard-Hanson is Savannah Guthrie’s late aunt. (Her late father’s sister). Ann had a daughter named Teri Stauffer. Teri had a daughter named Kayla Day. Not related to Nancy Guthrie (related by marriage).” Amid the online speculation, Hindustan Times confirmed that the individual being linked to the case as Nancy Guthrie’s purported niece has no connection with her disappearance. Additionally, the claims that Nancy and Kayla are relatives are not unverified.
