Keith Urban seemingly took a dig at his marriage to Nicole Kidman before their split was revealed.
During Sunday’s series premiere of the new CBS show “The Road,” which follows 12 aspiring musicians as they compete to open for Urban at music venues across the country, the 57-year-old singer performed his song “Straight Line” from his latest album, “High.”
Urban previously told fans in Feb. 2024 that the song is about “wanting to break out of a soul-sucking routine that you might be stuck in.”
“‘Straight Line’ is wanting to break out of a soul-sucking routine that you might be stuck in: maybe in a relationship, a job, with creativity, with yourself…whatever it is !!” he explained on Instagram of the message behind the track.
“It’s a message of feeling alive again and getting out from under that dark cloud,” Urban added. “If you’ve seen us in concert, I hope it gives you that same feeling.”
Urban also said that he chose “Straight Line” to be the lead single from the album “for a lot of reasons, but particularly because I think it represents an energy and spirit that became a through line of the whole record.”
“I’m gonna cover a lot of themes, emotions and vibes on this album but a very human spirit runs through them all,” he wrote.
Urban filmed “The Road” before news broke in September that the singer and Kidman, 58, separated after 19 years of marriage. Kidman officially filed for divorce from Urban on Sept. 30.
Earlier in the episode, Urban opened up about feeling “lonely and miserable” while on tour.
“Where do we start? It’s a calling, and you’re going to do it or you’re not going to make it,” Urban shared. “When you wake up on a tour bus at 3:30 in the morning and you’re sick as a dog, you’re in the middle of nowhere and you’ve got to play your fifth show later that night, and you haven’t slept, and you miss your friends, and you’re missing your family, and you’re completely lonely and miserable and sick — and you say to yourself, ‘Why am I doing this?’”
“The only answer can be: because this is what I’m born to do,” the Grammy Award winner added. “We’re going to find out who’s made for that stuff [on this show].”
Since Kidman’s divorce filing, new details have emerged about what went wrong between the former couple, who have reportedly been living separately “since the beginning of summer.”
“Their lives were moving in different directions, and once he quietly set up his own place, it felt like the writing was on the wall,” a source told People about Urban moving out of their family home.
“It really hasn’t been a secret in their circles that Keith and Nicole have been living separately for a while now,” the insider continued. “People close to Keith felt like the split was kind of inevitable.”
Rumors have also swirled that Urban is already involved with a new woman.
“All the signs point to the fact Keith is with another woman. Let’s just say, Nicole doesn’t dispute that, but she’s still shocked over it,” multiple sources told People.
The A-listers tied the knot in 2006, and are parents to daughters Sunday, 17, and Faith, 14.
