Kerala Sports Minister V Abdurahiman has accused Lionel Messi’s Argentina of “cheating” the state government after allegedly failing to honour a commitment to play an exhibition match despite receiving payment.
Speaking to a local television channel on Thursday, the minister said Kerala had invested significant effort and resources into bringing the world champions to the state, describing the initiative as both ambitious and emotionally driven.
‘We Did Not Expect Such a Betrayal’
“I really wanted the Argentina team and Lionel Messi to come to Kerala and play a match here. We held several discussions for that,” Abdurahiman said, noting the challenges involved in mobilising the estimated Rs 250 crore required to host a team of Argentina’s stature.
He alleged that even after financial arrangements were put in place, the team failed to follow through on its commitment.
“But after receiving the money, the Argentine team cheated us. We did not expect such a betrayal from them. Not coming after promising to do so,” he said.
Claims of Similar Incidents Elsewhere
The minister further claimed that Kerala may not be the only instance, suggesting a broader pattern in Argentina’s international engagements.
“When we enquired, we found that they had done this to five other countries as well. They took money but never went there to play,” he said, adding that legal action could be pursued and compensation sought.
From Big Promise to Collapse
The controversy marks a sharp turn from what was once projected as a marquee sporting event. In November last year, Abdurahiman had announced that Argentina, led by Messi, would visit Kerala in March 2026 for an exhibition match, a move that had sparked widespread excitement among football fans.
However, the plan has now fallen through, with no match taking place.
The proposal had been part of a broader effort by the Kerala government to position the state as a destination for international football, with earlier discussions held with the Argentine Football Association and FIFA to host a high-profile friendly.
Echoes of ‘GOAT Tour’ Disappointment
The latest row has also revived memories of Messi’s much-publicised “GOAT Tour” of India, which had drawn criticism, particularly in Kolkata.
Marketed as a landmark opportunity for fans, the tour faced backlash over organisation, limited fan engagement, and overall execution. Many supporters expressed disappointment at what they felt was a missed opportunity to meaningfully connect with one of football’s greatest icons.
