Smash-hit Netflix sensation, KPop Demon Hunters, follows Korean pop group, Huntrix, who lead double lives as demon hunters, and boast millions of fans worldwide

KPop Demon Hunters was viewed over 291 million times last year, making it Netflix’s most-watched film of all time. The animated musical sensation, which has bagged two Oscar nominations after being ruled ineligible for a BAFTA despite a formal appeal by the streaming platform, is nothing short of a global phenomenon.

Telling the tale of Korean pop group, Huntrix – who lead double lives as demonhunters and face off against a rival boy band – fans of the show, both kids and adults, have applauded the captivating and heartfelt storyline, fun characters and addictive music.

When they are not selling out stadiums, Korean pop superstars Rumi, voiced by Arden Cho, Mira and Zoey use their secret identities as demon hunters to protect their fans from an ever-present supernatural threat.

But how much are they worth?

The KPop movie has generated significant interest, with estimates that Demon Hunters made between £12 million £15 million since its release. The film’s production budget was £75 million and it’s become the highest-watched film on Netflix, proving its mindboggling popularity.

Meanwhile, actress Cho has a net worth projected between £4 – £5 million for lending her voice to main character, Rumi.

While it may present itself as a film for kids, a number of adults have also been wowed by the seismic release – with some hailing it as the “film of the year”.

Fans were also able to sing along in the cinema at a small number of screenings in August.

However, despite its popularity, the flick isn’t eligible for a BAFTA despite fierce opposition from the streaming platform.

BAFTA eligibility rules require films to have a qualifying theatrical release. However, under “exceptional circumstances,” the Film Committee may allow entries that have been made available to the U.K. public through other distribution models, such as event cinema.

Netflix appealed under this clause, arguing that the film’s event-style theatrical run — though held two months after its streaming debut — warranted consideration. But BAFTA’s Film Committee rejected the appeal, stating that the film did not meet the eligibility criteria.

However, the film is up for two Oscars next month. Directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, KPop Demon Hunters scored Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song nods, the latter of which went to the Grammy-nominated anthem, Golden.
