Netflix’s new documentary dives into former NBA star Lamar Odom’s life and death, and it has left fans asking the same question
Netflix viewers have been left puzzled by the title of a new documentary.
The new film delves into the private life of former NBA star Lamar Odom, detailing his near-death experience in October 2015. After a glittering basketball career, Lamar was found unresponsive at a brothel outside Las Vegas.
With never-before-heard interviews and first-hand accounts, the documentary tells the story of his brush with death through the eyes of Lamar, his ex-wife Khloe Kardashian and the former manager of the brothel he was found at.
The film has sparked backlash just hours after dropping on Netflix because its title, Untold: The Death and Life of Lamar Odom, seems to suggest that Lamar is dead.
Is Lamar Odom dead?
No, Lamar Odom is not dead. The film’s title is referring to his brush with death.
10 years ago, the 46-year-old had a near-fatal overdose and suffered kidney failure, 12 strokes and six heart attacks. He was placed in a medically induced coma for several days.
According to the New York native, doctors weren’t confident about his recovery, and even advised his family to say their final goodbyes.
When he woke up, Lamar was seen as a ‘miracle’. “All of my doctors say I’m like a walking miracle because it’s, like, medically impossible for somebody to survive 12 strokes and six heart attacks while in a coma,” he told USA Today ahead of the documentary’s premiere.
“And so I just take it day by day, and I’m more than grateful for life.”
While the title makes sense in the context of the sports star’s story, viewers have slammed it for being misleading.
Commenting under a Netflix clip of Khloe detailing Lamar’s drug addiction battle, one fan said: “The dude is not dead… wtf?!?”.
Another social media user added: “Why they said the death and life of the Lamar Odom like he’s dead,” while a third shared: “Hell nah… the title of this documentary is a mindf**k… I thought he died… I quickly jumped on Google to see when.”
Someone else agreed: “It’s the name of the show for me …yeah he died for a minute but he is still living…”.
With yet another viewer replying: “Right like had me second guessing if this man was still alive or not,” and a final commenter writing: “l was so confused with this title at first had me second guessing.”
