Hyderabad:Senior BRS leader and former irrigation minister T. Harish Rao on Wednesday warned that the frequent switching on and off of pumps at lift irrigation stations could cause serious damage.
In a letter to Irrigation Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy, he urged that the practice be stopped immediately and that pumps be operated for longer durations to avoid damage.
Harish Rao said pumps were being run in an unscientific manner at several lift irrigation systems, including the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Scheme’s Chandlapur pumping station and other stations in Packages 6, 8, 10, 11 and 12, as well as in Devadula Phase-III and similar projects.
He said these projects were built with massive public investment and designed as continuous-flow systems, not intermittent ones. Any deviation from prescribed protocols, he warned, could compromise system integrity, increase maintenance burden and threaten the long-term sustainability of the pumps.
