Friends star Lisa Kudrow, aka ditzy Phoebe, talks about her favourite memories of the show and her son’s general disinterest in her career-defining role growing up
Friends star Lisa Kudrow has revealed that her only child was never really that fussed about watching her in the now-iconic sitcom.
Kudrow, 62, who played quirky outsider Phoebe Buffay, said her now grown-up son Julian, now 27, watched the global hit in his schooldays – but only to keep up with his high school pals.
“He watched it in junior high because the other kids were talking about it, and he wasn’t that interested. He watched it so he knows what they’re talking about, but he hasn’t seen all of it!”
“He genuinely wasn’t interested. He really wasn’t”, she told Jessie Ware and her mum Lennie, for the latest episode of hit podcast Table Manners,
The star’s son – her only child with her French advertising exec husband Michel Stern, works as an actor and editor – and Kudrow said his girlfriend also has little clue when it comes to the world-famous adventures and misadventures of six New York flatmates.
“He has a girlfriend now, who’s fantastic. They’re in love. They’ve actually been together a couple years now. She had no idea who I was, because she never watched Friends, she didn’t like 90 sitcoms!”
Happily recalling her old Friends days with Jen Aniston, David Schwimmer, Courtney Cox, Matt LeBlanc and the late Matthew Perry, she said of bohemian masseuse Phoebe, with her terrible music, “She lightened me up [..] and her worldview.
“She was bonkers but in effect now, when I watch, I only honestly just started committing to watching every season. As I’m watching Phoebe, now, I’m saying – oh, that’s actually not crazy anymore!”
Kudrow also remembers her on-set friendships, particularly with the girls, with fondness. “Us girls had lunch every single day. And sometimes, you know, the guys would join, but we were all close, and especially in the beginning, we were like puppies just climbing all over each other and playing.”
Recalling the early days, the A-lister – who studied biology at university – and initially had her sights on becoming a doctor like her father, said, “You rehearse for a week, like a play, and then the audience comes on the fifth day or fourth day, and you shoot it in front of the audience.”
“I was 30, 31 when we started. And I was pregnant during that and I was tired, and we’re shooting till two in the morning.”
Kudrow is currently starring in a new series of HBO’s The Comeback, in which she plays washed-up sitcom star Valerie Cherish, who signs on to a reality show about her both cringe-worthy and hilarious attempts to stage a comeback.
