Liverpool are in ‘crisis mode’, says Jamie Carragher after four straight Premier League defeats

Jamie Carragher has labelled Liverpool’s alarming run of Premier League losses as a “crisis” as the former defender called on the Reds to improve their physicality.

The defending Premier League champions have lost their last four games in the league, with a 3-2 loss at Brentford seeing Arne Slot’s side drop to seventh in the table – seven points off leaders Arsenal.

Defeats to Chelsea, Crystal Palace, Manchester United and Brentford have led to questions over how Liverpool defend set-pieces, particularly following the loss in West London where the Bees were able to dominate aerially.

Ex-Reds centre-back and Sky Sports pundit believes their poor form is undoubtedly a crisis and questioned the make up of their squad following a huge summer outlay.

Carragher said: “Losing four games in a row for Brentford would be a disaster. To see the champions do it with the expenditure in the summer means we’re in crisis time for Liverpool right now.

“There will be a lot of serious questions asked in the dressing room between the players and the coaching staff and the people above the manager.

“When they’ve looked at what they’ve spent, they’ll be looking for a lot more.

“Liverpool have to look at the physicality and height within their team because, right now, I don’t think they have enough.”

Slot: Liverpool have no answer to set-pieces

Manager Slot was candid about Liverpool’s issues after the loss at Brentford, admitting his side currently have no answers when teams provide a threat through set-pieces and low blocks.

“Quite a few things,” Slot said in his post-match press conference when asked what was the cause of Liverpool’s current struggles.

“It is definitely that teams have a certain playing style against us; it is a very good strategy to play. We have not found an answer yet.

“Going 1-0 down does not help after five minutes. We are still, even today, when we don’t play well, able to score two goals.

“But you cannot compete, which we don’t do at the moment, because we concede too many goals. That is not only the defence, you do it with 11 players together.”
