Love Island could be heading to the big screen as early plans for a potential movie adaptation have been unveiled
Love Island devotees who can’t get enough of the addictive dating show during summer and winter evenings might soon have a full-length film to add to their viewing schedules.
The ITV reality dating programme sends young singles to a stunning villa in hopes they’ll find romance with their fellow occupants. The show’s success has led to several international versions, including Love Island USA and Love Island Australia.
In addition to the main show, there have been numerous spin-offs, such as All Stars, which brings back fan favourites from previous series for another shot at love in the villa. Another well-received extension to the franchise is Love Island Games, which follows a similar format to All Stars but invites former cast members from across the globe, reports OK!
Now, the next stage in the reality franchise’s evolution has been revealed, with ITV America executives reportedly discussing the possibility of adapting the dating show for the cinema.
ITV America CEO, David George, told Deadline that he had been contemplating how to adapt Love Island for film following a surge in viewership for Love Island USA’s sixth season.
“Why are we not taking Love Island and figuring out how we’re going to translate that into the movie world?” he posed to the publication. “There may be something going there. I can’t even begin to tell you what it is, but there are those types of conversations.”
Some fans have been far from thrilled by the prospect of a film adaptation, with many demanding the idea be scrapped. One wrote: “Look I love the show. But a movie?! Hard pass,” whilst another chimed in: “If it’s a horror I’ll watch.”
A third remarked: “The real question is not can this work, but what does a Love Island movie even say that the show has not already exhausted,” whilst a fourth quipped: “Well undiscuss it.”
“It will probably have Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell as the main cast,” a fifth viewer joked, whilst another, alluding to the reality programme’s notoriously relentless broadcasting timetable, shared: “To see the entire thing you have to go back to the theatre every day except Wednesday.”
Nevertheless, others showed greater enthusiasm for the idea, with one devotee of the show exclaiming: “So making reality TV into reality movie? YOU MEAN I CAN WATCH IT ALL IN ONE GO?!”. Another insisted that former Love Island UK champion Ekin-Su should be featured, declaring: “It better star Ekin-Su.”
Love Island UK, Love Island Australia, Love Island USA, Love Island All Stars and Love Island Games are currently streaming on ITVX
