A retro Lucozade flavour has returned to stores like Home Bargains after more than a decade, but the beloved drink has changed slightly and fans aren’t can’t agree on whether it’s a good or bad thing

Lucozade has brought back a retro flavour that will be familiar to many shoppers – though fans remain divided over a slight change up to the recipe. The beloved soft drink has long been a staple thanks to its high glucose content, which delivers an energy lift alongside a refreshing taste.

The drink was created by Newcastle pharmacist William Walker Hunter, initially named ‘Glucozade’ before it was snapped up by pharmaceutical firm Beecham’s in 1938. It was then rebranded as Lucozade, and promoted as an energy drink for people who weren’t feeling well.

Today, it enjoys widespread recognition and affection among many, including fitness enthusiasts, with ranges such as Lucozade Sport formulated to supply carbohydrates and electrolytes, aiding hydration during physical activity.

It also boasts nostalgic charm, with special edition flavours and sugar-free versions of the high-energy beverage attracting widespread interest. And now one beloved flavour has “finally” staged a return after over ten years of supporters campaigning and imploring the company for its comeback.

The flavour causing a stir? Lucozade Energy Grafrutti, which was initially released in 2015 before vanishing from the shelves. This month, it was reintroduced as a permanent fixture in the Lucozade range.

Unlike the original recipe, the mixed berry and citrus-flavoured beverage is completely sugar-free. It’s been promoted with the slogan “back for the believers”, and has been created “for the fans who never stopped believing”. The drink, which has been found in Home Bargains, Heron Foods, and various other retailers, comes in 500ml and 900ml bottles.

Food-focused social media page New Foods UK posted a picture of the hit beverage to its Facebook followers, with the caption: “New Grafruitti Lucozade spotted at Home Bargains too!”

In the comments section, fellow Facebook users were eager to voice their opinions – with some delighted about its comeback and others voicing their frustration over the fact the new version is sugar free.

One fan said: “I’ve bought [many] amounts of it already, it’s banging.” Another said: “The best flavour in the entire world has come back!!!!”

A third posted: “Need to get me some!!” A fourth shared: “Omg omg omg when I get paid I’m going to Home Bargains, that was my childhood drink.”

Another agreed and said: “Brings back memories.” Someone else commented: “It’s back finally.” Another said: “This literally used to be my favourite drink and now it’s a sugar free version need to get it.”

But one person disagreed. They tagged a friend and posted: “Remember these MEMORIES!!! I loved these, shame it’s sugar free tho!!”

Another said: “Sugar-free now, never used to be so it’s ruined.”

Someone else asked: “Lucozade used to be made with Glucose. How can they make it with zero sugar?” One Facebook user said: “Sugar free? I’ll pass thanks.”

And another added: “Supposed to not be the same at all, I miss the original.”

Others simply tagged their friends to point them towards the post.
