Bhopal: In Madhya Pradesh, 14 children have lost their eyesight while playing with a carbide gun on the occasion of Diwali. In addition, more than 122 children were admitted to the hospitals for having serious injuries in their eyes due to the harmful firecracker guns.

Every year, children and families anticipate the festival of Diwali. However, it’s essential to ensure precautionary measures that can otherwise prove fatal. Even though the government had issued a ban on the carbide guns in Vidisha before Diwali, the open market still sold these guns in the open market. The videos of carbide guns take rounds on social media, especially during Diwali, but they may lead to serious damage.

What did the victims say?

The victims who have suffered injuries while playing with carbide guns or desi firecracker guns have reported unrest and pain. A girl named Neha, who was just 17 years old, mentioned that when the gun exploded, she could see nothing, burning one of her eyes completely.

Some admitted that they tried to make the viral social media firecracker gun at home, which resulted in explosions and burning of eyes.

What are the doctors saying?

The doctors have stated that such devices are not toys and that they should be treated like explosives. The Chief Medical and Health Officer of Hamidia Hospital, Dr Manish Sharma, said that the gun directly impacts the eyes and the explosion releases metallic fragments which burn the retina. He also stated that the team has been treating serious cases of pupil rupture, even leading to permanent blindness in some cases.

The police of Vidisha have arrested six individuals for selling these firecracker guns amid the ban. Hospitals in Indore, Jabalpur, Bhopal, and Gwalior are filled with patients suffering from similar injuries.
