Mamta Mohandas Opens Up About Her Divorce From Ex-Husband, Prajith, ‘I Needed A Companion But..’

Mamta Mohandas is a talented actress and well-known for her acting prowess. Besides being a phenomenal Malayalam actress, Mamta is a playback singer and producer. She made her acting debut with the film, Mayookham. She rose to fame with the film, Kadha Thudarunnu. Coming to her personal front, she was married to a Bahrain-based businessman, Prajith Padmanabhan. In a recent interview, Mamta shared an unheard facet about her love life.

Recently, Mamta Mohandas had a chat with actor, Suhasini for a podcast with the jewellery brand Jos Alukkas. During the conversation, Mamta shared that before her marriage to Prajith, she dated two guys. Among them, one was an actor. Mamta mentioned that the actor asked her out on a date when he was already engaged to someone else. However, the guy kept it a secret from her. Later, the actor’s brother revealed the truth about his engagement to Mamta after a month. Mamta added that when she got to know the truth, she was heartbroken. She was quoted as saying:

“I dated two guys before getting married. It was very silly how much trust we place in another person. I only dated one guy from cinema back then. I even got my mother’s approval. He was just engaged when he asked me out on a date. And I only found out about this a month later from his brother. He said, I think he has been seeing someone, and I should tell you honestly that he’s engaged. It was a real shock. Obviously, I was heartbroken.”

During the same conversation, Mamta Mohandas revealed why she got married in the first year of her cancer treatment. For the unversed, Mamta got married to Prajith in December 2011 in Thalassery, Kerala. The Kadha Thudarunnu actress was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma, a type of cancer that severely affects a person’s lymphatic system and immune system, in 2010. Her cancer relapsed in 2013. She was quoted as saying:

“I did meet a couple of men a few years before my marriage. What was interesting was that even before I got into a relationship, my diagnosis happened. I got married after the first year of my cancer treatment. One of the reasons for the haste was to fulfil all the other expectations I had of myself as a woman. I did not have practice with relationships or dating.”

Mamta Mohandas met her ex-husband, Prajith Padmanabhan, at his twin sister’s wedding. They bonded over their shared interests, and it was Prajith who proposed to Mamta. The couple got engaged in November 2011. During the same conversation, Mamta opened up about her marriage to Prajith that led to a divorce within one year. 

In December 2012, they parted ways. Mamta shared that she believed marriage is a lifelong commitment. She mentioned that parting ways was not an easy decision for her. Mamta added that she was one who wanted to tie the knot but was fighting with a lot of issues. She was quoted as saying:

“I believed in marriage as a lifelong commitment, but six months later, I had to walk away. It wasn’t an easy decision. I was the one who wanted to get married, but I was fighting my health, and my mother had concerns. I thought I needed a companion. But marriage requires effort from both sides.”
