A man has shared his ‘wildest ever thrift find’ after he bought a suit jacket from a charity shop – and then discovered it was once owned by a high-profile celebrity

A man has been left stunned after buying a suit jacket from a charity shop, only to find out it previously belonged to a famous celebrity. He revealed how he was having a browse in a charity shop in West Village, New York, when he spotted the $145 (£109) suit jacket – and chose to snap it up for a special event.

But he was amazed when he noticed a celebrity’s name scribbled inside it – similar to how mums and dads label their kids’ school uniforms. He posted on Reddit: “This might be the wildest ever thrift find. I did actually find a piece of paper in the pocket with a bunch of measurements and specifications with his name too.”

The Richard James suit jacket sells for approximately £500 online – but its actual value could reach thousands if, as the labels indicate, it genuinely once belonged to Sir Elton John.

Responding to his post, one user commented: “There is also one listed on eBay with the pants. This is their description.

“‘Elton John Custom Suit- Richard James Tailored- Rare – 1/5. This is one of five suits purchased at a HIV/AIDS charity shop in NYC. Richard James is known as Elton John’s preferred Savile Row tailor.

“‘This suit is in wonderful condition and is the perfect collectible for a fan of Elton John. Inside one pant pocket was the paper seen in the final images.

“‘Authenticity cannot be guaranteed, but it is very likely that these are authentic. Please be the judge yourself.'”

Another user added: “One of those things where you’ll never truly know, but no one can ever tell you otherwise either. You now own Elton John’s coat.”

A third user speculated: “I think it might be the real deal. Elton John’s friends with Richard James of Savile Row. It’s got to be post February 1998. Since that’s when he was knighted. I hope you find more information. How exciting!”

Someone else said: “While I know it wouldn’t go down this way, it’d also be hilarious if he wrote Sir Elton John on every piece of his clothing himself. I know I would if I was knighted.”

Another user said: “Awesome find! Is there a chance that it’s a costume jacket from the movie Rocketman? I know wardrobe will label pieces with character names similar to that.

“I’m wondering if it’s a legit Richard James piece for the movie vs a legit Richard James piece for Sir Elton.

“The measurements would probably help determine if they match the OG or the actor, as it is probably bespoke jacket.”

A final user concluded: “Considering where it was found and considering the style, I think you’ve got the real deal.”
