A man in his 30s is in a critical but stable condition in hospital after he sustained head and facial injuries in a serious assault in Omagh, County Tyrone.

A police patrol came across the injured victim on Main Street in the town at about 01:00 GMT on Sunday, according to Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) Det Sgt Johnston.

The officer said while he was being spoken to, his condition “rapidly deteriorated” and police at the scene carried out CPR on him before taking him to hospital.

An 18-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of grievous bodily harm with intent.

“We believe the assault may have occurred in the gated Main Street area,” Det Sgt Johnston added.

Police have appealed to any witnesses, or anyone who has CCTV/dash-cam or other video footage which could assist their enquiries, to contact them.

The arrested teenager remains in custody.
