Teenage cancer survivor who has raised more than £55,000 for others meets her hero Margot Robbie and gets another big surprise

Young Georgie Hyslop shares Barbie’s motto: “You can be anything.” So, imagine the teenage fundraiser’s joy when she met her hero and star of the Barbie movie, Margot Robbie.

“I’ve heard all about the fundraising you’ve been doing, everything you’ve been through, it has been hugely inspiring for me,” the Wolf of Wall Street actress told her.

The Hollywood star met cancer survivor Georgie, who has raised more than £55,000 for others, to tell her she has been crowned the Good Morning Britain Young Fundraiser at the Daily Mirror Pride of Britain Awards, with P&O Cruises. Overjoyed at meeting her idol, Georgie said: “I can’t even imagine that that’s happened to me.”

Told they were taking part in a documentary about extraordinary people, Georgie and her family were invited to a posh London hotel for what they believed was an on-camera interview.

But as Georgie was getting ready to tell her story, Margot, was waiting patiently outside the door. And she was so taken aback when the movie star walked in, that she only managed to squeeze out a small “hi” before telling Margot, 35, she felt “a bit overwhelmed”.

“I can imagine, I have kind of sprung this on you out of the blue,” Margot laughed, adding: “I am here to let you know that you have won a Pride of Britain Award. I am so excited for you, congratulations.”

On hearing the incredible news, Georgie put her head in her hands, before turning to her equally surprised family and asking: “Did youse know?” At just 15 years old, Georgie, from Androssan, Scotland, was diagnosed with an extremely rare bone cancer called Ewing’s sarcoma, after experiencing unexplained leg pain.

The brave teenager endured 14 rounds of chemotherapy and 33 of radiotherapy – spending around 190 days in hospital. Georgie explained that, despite the survival rates for Ewing’s sarcoma being “single digits”, she never doubted that she would recover. She said: “My approach to getting through treatment was trying to make everyone else as happy as they can be. I would do anything to put a smile on someone’s face.”

For the selfless youngster, this meant spreading joy throughout the corridors of the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre, during her time there. She would give out cards with kind and encouraging messages to her fellow patients, known as ‘pocket hugs’. She even dressed up as SpiderMan to cheer up a four-year-old receiving raiotherapy treatment.

Soon, Georgie realised she could use the same positive approach to help others fighting cancer. “We decided to start raising money for cancer charities and the first thing we did was shave our heads,” she said – a stunt that raised £5,000 in 24 hours. According to her sister Megan: “Georgie was like ‘I want to do everything I can to keep building this’ and she’s just never stopped.”

And last year, Georgie raised £13,000 by throwing a charity ball. In July 2024, she was given the all clear and told her cancer was in remission, only for scans earlier this year to reveal devastating news. She recalled: “We were told that the cancer was back, and I felt like flying my chair across the room.”

Despite her relapse, she continues to put others first, persevering with her fundraising efforts – raising more than £55,000 through charity balls, sponsored walks, ziplines and more. “I want to make it as easy as possible for other people, because it’s not an easy thing to go through,” she explained. What’s important to me now is to make people as happy as they can be. I’m going to keep fundraising for as long as I’m alive.”

Now, Georgie will be recognised on the national stage for her efforts. And she is still walking on air from her wonderful day when she met the real-life Barbie. Georgie and her family were even personally invited by Margot to attend the premier of her latest flick, A Big Bold Beautiful Journey, that evening.

And she told the star of her own ambitions to act and go into the movie industry. “I’m in a very good place, I think it’s really important to have dreams and goals,” Georgie said. Gushing over the experience afterwards, she declared: “I can’t believe I’ve just met Margot Robbie!”
