TEHRAN- According to the head of the Industrial Development and Renovation Organization of Iran (IDRO), a production line for maritime containers is set to be launched soon with the cooperation of private sector.

Farshad Moghimi added: “In the field of maritime container production, given the existing need, an applicant has approached this organization to undertake manufacturing. We plan to provide them with the necessary infrastructure so they can begin the work of producing maritime containers.”

He stated that this private sector operator will initially begin producing maritime containers in a foreign country and import these products. After producing an acceptable quantity, the production line for maritime containers will then be transferred to Iran.

Moghimi continued, explaining that the production of maritime containers will start using the CKD (Completely Knocked Down) or assembly method, after which the process will move towards deeper domestic manufacturing.

The head of IDRO said: “I hope a factory is established that can continuously carry out the domestic manufacture of maritime containers, and by creating this capacity, the country’s needs in this area will be met.”

Moghimi stated that with the commencement of this operation, instead of placing orders with foreign manufacturers, they will pursue the production of this strategic product with a domestic producer.

He added: “We have had some production in the container sector in the past, but applicants and consumers have had complaints regarding the price of these products.”

The Deputy Minister of Industry, Mining and Trade continued: “It is my belief that if the volume of orders does not reach an appropriate level, the final cost will naturally be high, and one cannot expect the product to have a suitable price right at the start of production.”

Moghimi emphasized: “A producer cannot be blamed for the high price of a strategic product at the beginning of production, and time must be given to the producer to adjust the price.”

According to this report, the head of the secretariat of the High Council of Maritime Industries had previously stated that around 30,000 containers on the standard TEU (Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit) scale need to be added to the maritime transport fleet annually to maximize the utilization of cargo capacity via sea routes.

It is worth noting that since a number of containers in the current transport fleet need to be decommissioned, and approximately 330,000 containers are used in the fleet, the introduction of new containers is a necessity.

According to the announcement by the secretariat of the High Council of Maritime Industries, domestic manufacturers face no technical issues in producing maritime containers. They possess the technology for producing these containers, and the country has the necessary expertise in terms of welding, quality control tests, and international standards.
