Comedian Martin Short is said to be ‘inconsolable’ following the death of his daughter Katherine, who was found dead at the age of 42 at her Hollywood Hills home
Martin Short is receiving the support of those closest to him after the shocking death of his daughter. Katherine Hartley Short was found dead at the age of 42 at her Hollywood Hills home.
The LAPD confirmed the comedian’s daughter died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Now, as Martin – who adopted Katherine and her siblings Oliver and Henry with his late wife Nancy Dolman – deals with his devastation, a number of Hollywood stars are said to be rallying around him in support.
The star is reportedly “inconsolable” as he grieves Katherine’s death. A source says her passing has “completely shattered him”.

The source told the Daily Mail: “He is gutted, and as you would expect, his closest friends are surrounding him with love and support.” Images published on the website show a weary looking Martin arriving at his son’s house following the news.
And he was joined by Kurt Russell, who pulled up in his grey Genesis G90 luxury sedan. It’s said the actor was at the property for around 10 minutes.

Others arriving to pay their respects and share messages of condolence included iconic director Steven Spielberg and actor Eugene Levy .
A source also told the publication that other stars, including Martin’s closest pals Steve Martin and Meryl Streep had been trying to comfort their friend. They said: “Both Steve and Meryl are going to make sure to be there for him throughout this heartbreaking time.”
The pair were also said to have been Martin’s rock following the death of his wife in 2010. Nancy died after a cancer diagnosis. The insider continued: “Bringing his children into his world through adoption with his wife, Nancy, who passed away, was the greatest thing he has ever done, and to lose Katherine is just as bad and sad as it was to lose Nancy. It is just a terrible time for Martin right now, but that is to be expected.'”
Neighbours had also been leaving letters at her residency. One read: “Last night a light went out here on Earth. but one turned on in the sky. Today that light has a name. Katherine Short. Dear Katherine. You will be missed always.”
According to TMZ, the LAPD responded to Katherine’s Hollywood Hills home on Monday shortly after 6pm. A spokesperson for Martin told the Daily Mail: “It is with profound grief that we confirm the passing of Katherine Hartley Short.
“The Short family is devastated by this loss, and asks for privacy at this time.” Short’s representative added: “Katherine was beloved by all and will be remembered for the light and joy she brought into the world.”
Katherine had previously joined Martin at several events. In May 2023, the comedian took his daughter to the afterparty for The Producers, where they posed with Goldie Hawn. She also went with her dad to the red carpet in 2011.
