Mary Berry, baking legend and TV star, turns 91 today, but you may be taken aback to learn she got arrested. It all happened after police stopped her at an airport
One of the biggest legends on TV is arguably Mary Berry, as the cook has spent years perfecting her recipes for all to enjoy. However, as the star turns 91 today (March 24), there’s something about Dame Mary Berry that you likely don’t know.
Though you may associate the TV cook with baking cakes, hosting TV shows and formerly being a judge on The Great British Bake Off, she also previously had a brush with the law. While chatting with Claudia Winkleman on The Graham Norton Show a while back, she revealed one of her darkest secrets that nearly landed her doing a stint in prison.
It’s not the only major news Mary has released recently either. Earlier this month, she also opened up about a major life change she’s undertaking.
While speaking on the show, Mary explained: “25 years ago I was asked to go to America to do cookery demonstrations, and I’m very particular at getting everything right.
“I also try to look ahead, so I thought I ought to have my recipes, all the ingredients, weighed out in case the plane is late, or in case the connections aren’t right.
“I can go straight on stage to do my cookery demonstrations. So, I weighed out each recipe in little bags, and I had the flour and the sugar and everything grouped together, so that I could lift it out for the first recipe and so on.
“When we arrived, there were dogs, and I love dogs, and I was just ready to go and they all, three of them came up with their noses sort of like this [does the impression], and I thought ‘come along’, but they didn’t want to know me.
“They just began and then suddenly the airport became empty, and there were just uniformed people, and I was with Lucy Young, my assistant. They parted us – Lucy there, me there – into two cells.”
Claudia then chimed in, quipping: “Mary Berry in a cell with a selection of packets containing white powder.” It was then revealed the police asked if she was expecting to “make money” from the packets.
To this, Mary hilariously responded: “Oh, I do, and my fee has already been agreed.” The story got thousands of people laughing, as they couldn’t believe how the events unfolded.
Thousands of people have viewed a clip of the interview since it was re-shared online. It’s fair to say it’s a cracker of a story.
One person said: “Wow, and she’s so cute.” Another added: “Brilliant.”
A third replied: “I just love Dame Mary Berry.” Meanwhile, a fourth also commented: “I will never skip this video.”
Naturally, so many people found the story brilliant, especially Claudia, who had been told the tale previously. It just goes to show how careful you have to be while travelling.
But, when it comes to baking, it’s fair to say Mary really knows what she’s doing. We’re thrilled to have had her with us for 91 years.
