Worked as a journalist
Born in a middle-class family in Patna, RK Sinha earned a degree in Political Science in 1971. To improve his family’s financial situation, he took a job as a trainee reporter in a publication. During this time, the India-Pakistan War broke out. During this time, he befriended soldiers of the Bihar Regiment. After the war ended, he joined the JP movement in 1973, which led to his dismissal from his job.
Starting a security company
He was at a loss for what to do next. During that time, he met a friend who ran a construction business. He told him he was looking for ex-servicemen to protect project sites. When Sinha mentioned his friendship with soldiers from the Bihar Regiment during the war, his friend advised him to start a security company.
RK Sinha then contacted ex-servicemen. Many of them were looking for work after retirement. In February 1974, he founded SIS in a two-room garage in Patna. He met with his contacts in the Bihar Regiment, collected details of retired personnel, and convinced them to work. Within a year of SIS’s establishment, the company’s employee strength grew to 250-300, and turnover exceeded Rs 1 lakh.
Company earns most revenue from Australia
RK Singh’s company provides services in several countries, including Australia, apart from India. SIS derives its largest revenue from Australia. SIS has established a joint venture with Spain’s Prosegur to provide cash logistics services. RK Sinha is not only a successful businessman but also a politician. Sinha is one of the founding members of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and has served as a Rajya Sabha MP.
Company revenues exceed Rs 12,000 crore
Last year, RK Sinha reported that his company employed over 284,000 employees. SIS Group’s revenue in FY24 reached Rs 12,261 crore and EBITDA reached Rs 585 crore.
