Meet The Vegetable Seller Who Turned His Rooftop Into a School for 1000+ Children in Bihar

At daybreak in a small town in Bihar, children begin climbing a narrow flight of stairs. There are no painted school gates or morning bells waiting for them at the top. Instead, there is a rooftop — and a vegetable seller who decided that learning should never depend on money.

Each morning, hundreds of students climb these stairs to attend classes on Rohit Kumar’s rooftop.

That rooftop belongs to Rohit Kumar. What began with four children and a fee of Rs 125 has grown into a classroom for over 1,000 students.

When survival sparked a mission

Born in a small village in Bihar, Rohit once dreamed of becoming an artist. But dreams often take a backseat when survival comes first. His mother single-handedly carried the family’s burden, selling cow dung to pay for his school fees. Money was scarce, and expectations were limited.

Rohit himself struggled academically and found it difficult to even pass Class 10. After school hours, while others rested, he sold vegetables to support his family. Yet deep inside, he held on to one belief: that education could change lives.

When finances tightened further, Rohit began tutoring a few children in his neighbourhood to earn extra income. He charged Rs 125 a month. If a child could not afford the fee, he still welcomed them.

Initially, four students gathered on his modest rooftop. Then more came.

A rooftop that redefined learning

People laughed at him, judging him for his low marks and questioning how he could possibly teach others.

But Rohit wasn’t trying to prove his report card right, he was trying to prove that learning itself could be different.

He simplified science lessons, moved away from rote memorisation, and created a space where children could ask questions without fear. He stayed back until every child understood the concept — often teaching from 5 am to 5 pm, including weekends and holidays.

Once a struggling student, Rohit Kumar now spends long hours simplifying science so every child understands.

Gradually, more students began to join — four became 40, and 40 soon turned into hundreds.

Today, nearly 1,000 children attend classes on his rooftop. What began as a way to supplement his income has turned into an affordable learning space for families who need it most.

His students even created his Instagram page, where lakhs now watch his simple science experiments online. But for Rohit, social media fame isn’t the achievement that matters most. His proudest moment is far more personal: his mother no longer has to work. She now watches her son teach from the same rooftop that once carried her hopes for him.

Rohit hopes to expand affordable online education so that more children can access quality learning. If a rooftop in Bihar can hold 1,000 dreams, there is room to build many more classrooms across the country.
