Many experts claim that Artificial Intelligence (AI) will become a significant part of our lives in the future. Apart from replacing a variety of devices, people in creative fields are also concerned that AI will take over their jobs. However, will there be a time when we will be sitting in the cinemas watching a completely AI-generated movie with no real humans involved, even for acting? Well, the creation of Tilly Norwood has made Hollywood worried that the time might come very soon.

Tilly Norwood is an actress, however, there is a catch. She isn’t real at all. She is an AI persona made up of binary data and created by an AI production company. However, with reports claiming that many studios want to sign her, the hackles of many major Hollywood filmmakers are up. So, here’s everything to know about Tilly Norwood, from her creation to the Hollywood backlash.

Tilly Norwood was created in 2025 by Eline Van der Velden

Tilly Norwood might have big Hollywood aspirations, but literally speaking, she isn’t even a year old. She was created in 2025 by Xicoai, under Particle6 Group, and the founder, Eline Van der Velden. Interestingly, Eline herself is a Dutch actress and writer. As of now, Tilly’s only appearance has been in a completely AI-generated sketch called AI Commissioner, produced by Particle6. Over the last few months, Eline has shared some big ambitions for the studio with Tilly. The creator said that many agents have shown interest in signing the AI actress, and she might make her on-screen debut in 2026. Moreover,  Eline stated that they are aiming for Tilly to become the next Scarlett Johansson or Natalie Portman.

All of Hollywood is against the AI actress, Tilly Norwood

Apart from stating that the studio wants Tilly Norwood to become a superstar at par with some of the biggest names of Hollywood, Eline also said that many TV and movie agencies were going for the AI route due to financial reasons. However, the subject of a non-human actor isn’t sitting well with anyone over at Los Angeles. Many major players of the film industry have spoken up against Tilly Norwood’s creation.

Emily Blunt called the idea of an AI actor ‘really, really scary’ and asked agencies not to take away the ‘human connection’. Other actresses, such as Melissa Barrera, Natasha Lyonne, and more, also suggested that agencies that have signed Tilly should be boycotted. Whoopi Goldberg, Lucy Hale, Adelaide Kane, and many more have called out anyone trying to ‘normalize this’. James Cameron, known for his CGI-heavy movies such as Terminator and Avatar, also spoke out against the inclusion of an AI actress.

The major backlash has been from SAG-AFTRA (Screen Actors Guild–American Federation of Television and Radio Artists). The union has been vocal in its opposition to AI platforms for allegedly plagiarising the work of many real writers and artists without acknowledgement. They also opposed Tilly Norwood’s existence and stated:

“To be clear, ‘Tilly Norwood’ is not an actor. It’s a character generated by a computer program that was trained on the work of countless professional performers – without permission or compensation. Creativity is, and should remain, human-centred. The union is opposed to the replacement of human performers by synthetics.”

Tilly Norwood’s creator addressed the backlash and promised that human actors’ jobs are safe

After the huge uproar it caused in the film industry, Eline took to her Instagram and shared a statement saying that Tilly Norwood was not a replacement for humans. The creator said that, like animation and CGI, inclusion of an AI actor would bring more ‘fresh opportunities’, but nothing could take away the craft of human performance. She wrote:

“I see Al not as a replacement for people, but as a new tool – a new paintbrush. Just as animation, puppetry, or CGI opened fresh possibilities without taking away from live acting, Al offers another way to imagine and build stories. I’m an actor myself, and nothing – certainly not an Al character – can take away the craft or joy of human performance.”
