She told Good Housekeeping UK : “It was always a difficult relationship between the four of us. For a start, you’ve got two sisters. Nic and I were best friends when we were 11, then Shaz and I were best friends… we could never get it right. It’s such a shame; I think if we’d got it right, we’d have been laughing. At the same time, we didn’t fake it. We didn’t pretend we were okay. And we certainly didn’t stay in the band for money.”
Melanie said she felt “ashamed about being in a pop band” and would’ve preferred to work with artists like Timbaland and Missy Elliott. Despite it’s success, she made a big “fuss” over the release of their hit track Pure Shores back in 2000, which she now admits was “wrong” because it was their “biggest song”.
She said: “I’m more comfortable with hearing All Saints songs now, but I spent many, many years feeling ashamed about being in a pop band.”
In October, Melanie recalled her music bosses shocking reaction to finding out she was pregnant during her time in the band. The singer candidly opened up on her time in the music industry and laid bare the realities of fame in the 90s.
She took part in new documentary, GirlBands Forever, where she shared a time she informed managers of her pregnancy along with bandmate Nicole Appleton. Melanie claimed they were both told to abort their babies and urged to focus on the success of All Saints.
Speaking on the show, Melanie said: “I hadn’t been with my partner for very long, it was definitely a bit of a surprise It wasn’t people congratulating us. It was more like this look of dread and worry and the realisation that things are going to change.
Melanie said her bosses told her and Nicole they were “going to ruin everything” and “it was the end of the band”. Melanie did have her baby with her then partner, Stuart Zender, the bassist for band Jamiroquai. Nicole, who was pregnant with then boyfriend Robbie Williams, did not have her baby.
In the documentary, Melanie admitted it put strain on her relationship with Nicole despite them being best friends since they were 11-years-old. She said they took pregnancy tests together and discussed raising children alongside each other.
The singer added: “And it’s not really my place to talk about it, but unfortunately . . . it was a very uncomfortable situation because I kept mine, she didn’t.” Melanie said it was a “really tricky part” of their relationship. Melanie told Good Housekeeping: “I don’t think we’ve ever spoken about it, to this day.”
