Mets have potential to replicate stolen base success — but there’s still a question to answer

PORT ST. LUCIE — For all his success in the batter’s box last season, Juan Soto seemed to take the most pride in leading the National League with a career-high 38 stolen bases.

It was part of a larger dynamic in which the Mets were constantly on the run and incredibly efficient with an 89.1 percent success rate in stolen bases, which easily led the major leagues. The Mets were fifth in MLB with 147 stolen bases.

Soto and Francisco Lindor (31 stolen bases) were the ringleaders. This newest version of the Mets will have that 1-2 punch, along with Luis Robert Jr. (33 stolen bases last season with the White Sox) and potentially Carson Benge (22 stolen bases in the minor leagues) as added weapons.

“I think we’re going to be in a good spot whenever the team is going to need the speed,” Soto said Thursday. “We’re going to have it, so it’s going to be fun.”
