Mets’ ticket timing couldn’t be worse with wallet hit during gutting week

Meet the Mets! Meet the Mets! Step right up and greet the Mets!

When it comes to bad timing, the Mets outdid themselves this week.

On Wednesday, the same day the team lost Pete Alonso to a free agent deal with the Orioles, and on the heels of seeing Edwin Díaz go to the Dodgers after being outbid by the World Series champions and not given a chance to match, die-hard Mets fans were hit with another insult.

The Mets confirmed that Wednesday was one of the regularly scheduled automatic payments deadline that’s part of the season-ticket payment plans.

To make matters worse, spring training tickets for games in Port St. Lucie went on sale.

Many fans were left wondering who they’d be seeing with a trio of longtime Mets no longer around — as Brandon Nimmo was also traded to the Rangers earlier in the offseason — and the top addition so far has been Devin Williams, most famous with the Mets for having allowed Alonso’s go-ahead homer in Game 3 of the 2024 wild-card series in Milwaukee and for struggling in his lone season with the Yankees.

David Stearns has several months to retool the roster, which collapsed in the second half of last season, going from the best record in baseball to missing the playoffs.

The fallout has included an almost entirely remade coaching staff under manager Carlos Mendoza and a team that still has some huge holes to fill.
