Mike Tirico calls lifelong Jets fan Adam Sandler a Patriots supporter ‘as always’ in Super Bowl 2026 gaffe

Adam Sandler might have some explaining to do to reiterate that he is, indeed, still a Jets fan.

The legendary actor and comedian was shown by the NBC broadcast during a sequence that cut to celebrities in the first half of Super Bowl 2026 on Sunday, and when the network captured Sandler from his seat, play-by-play broadcaster Mike Tirico said, “Adam Sandler, supporting the Patriots as per usual.”

Sandler’s head was turned to the right at the time, and the white hat he was wearing only showed the Super Bowl logo and the Patriots’ team logo.

But despite Tirico’s comment, the Seattle logo was on the other side of the hat — and some social media users speculated that Sandler, 59, wasn’t supporting New England after all.

That would align with past interviews and comments about his fandom, where Sandler, who was born in New York City, talked about being a Jets fan — “lifelong fandom,” Peyton Manning said during Sandler’s “ManningCast” appearance last season — and the state of the team.

“In 1969, I was as happy as could be,” Sandler said during his “Manningcast” appearance when the Jets opened the season against the 49ers, referencing the Jets’ lone Super Bowl title.

“I was a 3-year-old boy. I was thinking about this could be something that goes on year after year. I was promised that from my dad. ‘Stick with the Jets,’ he said, and now look at us. My heart hurts, fellas.”

At the time of that ESPN2 appearance, the Jets were down by 16 points to the 49ers, and the “Uncut Gems” star and “Happy Gilmore 2” mastermind was still optimistic about how Aaron Rodgers looked in his first regular-season game since tearing his Achilles in Week 1 the previous season.

He talked about how the Jets’ defense was better than it looked.

Pictures appeared throughout the segment, capturing Sandler in Jets gear, including one where he shook Joe Namath’s hand.

For one moment, though, the sports world was left confused, thinking that his football loyalty had shifted.
