Preview for Minnesota Vikings @ Los Angeles Chargers

Carson Wentz was clear. Play well this weekend and let the future take care of itself.

Wentz will start at quarterback when the Minnesota Vikings (3-3) go to the Los Angeles Chargers on Thursday Night Football. He is then set to make way for the returning JJ McCarthy who is on schedule to recover from a high right ankle sprain for the clash with the Detroit Lions on November 2.

It is not an ideal situation for Wentz but the 32-year-old has been around long enough to focus on what he can control.

“My mindset is to go win this game,” Wentz said, “and focus on the here and now. I don’t have a lot of time or energy to think beyond this one, quite frankly. So let the future take care of itself, but the mindset is to go 1-0 this week and find a way to get mentally and physically as ready as I can on a short week.”

The injury-plagued McCarthy will miss his 22nd regular-season game in 24 opportunities since the Vikings selected him in the 2024 draft and Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell admitted he’s “just not there” yet.

O’Connell said: “If he doesn’t have the ability to do certain thiings pain-free, we obviously risk setting him back, which would be very, very unfortunate with the time lost already.”

The Vikings will fancy their chances against a Chargers (4-3) team whose encouraging early-season performances have taken a dip. They have lost three of their last four games, including last weekend’s 38-24 loss at home to the Indianapolis Colts.
