Mohanlal’s ‘Drishyam 3’ Is Releasing Six Months Prior To Ajay Devgn Starrer, Here’s Why

The Malayalam crime thriller, Drishyam, is all set to return with a bang. Yes, you read it right. Drishyam 3 is scheduled to release in theatres on April 2, 2026. Mohanlal is reprising his role of ‘George Kutty’. Directed by Jeethu Joseph, the film will also star Meena as ‘George’s’ wife, ‘Rani George’, Ansiba Hassan as ‘Anju’, and Esther Anil as ‘Anu’. Due to its immense popularity, the film has been remade in multiple languages, including Hindi, Tamil and more.

According to the latest reports, Mohanlal starrer, Drishyam 3, is releasing on Ajay Devgn’s birthday, which is on April 2, 2026. For the unversed, the date marks the family’s alibi after the murder case in the first film. Drishyam 3 Hindi version stars, Ajay Devgn, Shriya Saran, Ishita Dutta, Mrunal Jadhav, Tabu and more. If the reports are believed to be true, then Mohanlal’s film is releasing six months prior to Ajay Devgn starrer.

The makers of the original Malayalam made the decision to release it six months prior just to avoid the box office fight. When Panorama Studios confirmed that the hit franchise, both Malayalam and Hindi, is returning with the new instalment, the box office clash became a topic of discussion. As both versions are aiming for a pan-India release, the box office fight was evident. Just to avoid direct competition, makers of Mohanlal starrer decided to release it, maintaining a six-month gap.

According to a Manorama Online report, theatres in Kerala must run four shows daily of Drishyam 3. They must run it without fail, even if there are strikes or low occupancy. Jeethu Joseph’s film must stay in the theatres for four weeks. As per the same report, in the first week, distributors will receive 60 per cent of the revenue, followed by 55 per cent, 50 per cent and 50 per cent in the second, third and fourth weeks. If the report is believed to be true, then Drishyam 3, starring Mohanlal, is likely be another box office hit.

Will Drishyam 3 Malayalam and Hindi versions have different stories?

Rumours were rife that Drishyam 3 Malayalam and Hindi version will have different stories. It is noteworthy to mention that so far, the two versions had the same plot. However, in an interview with TOI, Jeetu Joseph, the director of the original film, has set the record straight. He shared that the Hindi version will have a similar story. He mentioned that he will be sharing his original script with them and they will adapt it accordingly.

In a 2025 interview with Baradwaj Rangan, Jeethu Joseph talked about the upcoming instalment, Drishyam 3. He shared that the audience will definitely like the film. He mentioned that Drishyam 3 will be a good film, and he is not at all worried about its box-office success. He also shared details about the character arc of Mohanlal, who plays the role of ‘George Kutty’. Moreover, Jeethu also gave a warning to the fans of the franchise regarding the upcoming instalment. He was quoted as saying:

“I am happy with Drishyam 1 and 2, and Drishyam 3 is going to be a good film. I don’t know about the box office thing, but I approached the character growth organically, not considering Mohanlal as an actor, but I considered him as George Kutty, and whatever changes can happen after four years, that’s where I am working on. If the audiences are expecting a heavy intelligence game like Drishyam 2, then they will be disappointed.”
