Lahore tops the world’s most polluted city list with AQI 274. City’s average AQI was at 183.

World’s Most Polluted City: India’s national capital – Delhi is experiencing deteriorating air quality and it is expected to deteriorate further after Diwali. But still, it is not the most polluted city in the world. According to a report by ARY News, citing the latest global air monitoring data, Pakistan’s Lahore has once again topped the world’s most polluted city list with an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 274. Notably, the pollution levels in Lahore differ from area to area. For instance, AQI in Allama Iqbal Town was 459, AQI at Gulberg stood at 396, at Shadman was 384 and at Model Town was 362.
What Is Lahore’s Average AQI?
As per the report, the current average AQI of the city stood at 183, which means ‘unhealthy’ category. However, officials stated that the air quality will improve as wind activity increases.
What Is The Request Of Environmental Authorities To The People?
Authorities are urging citizens to avoid unnecessary outdoor activities. They are requesting that children, elderly and those with respiratory conditions stay indoors.
Anti-Smog Gun Operation
The Punjab government initiated an anti-smog gun operation in Lahore, the first of its kind. The drive which was conducted in Kahna area, decreased air pollution levels by 70 percent.
Senior Provincial Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb took to X and shared a video of the anti-smog gun operation. She said that under the guidance of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif AQI in Kahna has drastically dropped from 666 to 170.

“This 70 percent decrease in air pollution has been scientifically analysed & confirmed by our advanced environmental monitoring system”, the minister stated.
In January this year, the AQI levels in Lahore reached to dangerous levels of 529, which is classified as hazardous.
The PM2.5, has been found to have a concentration that is 35.6 times higher than the thresholds established by the World Health Organisation (WHO), according to a report by Dawn.
