Life
In our Mother’s Day series, Morin Oluwole, an International Luxury Business Leader and Emirates Woman columnist, reflects on the influence of her mother, who has shaped and allowed her to grow with clarity and conviction. Here, she revisits some childhood memories that, with time, have become a deeper appreciation for her mother’s quiet strength and instinct and the lessons that continue to guide her and the wisdom she now hopes to pass on to her own daughter.
What is one thing your mother has done for you that you didn’t fully appreciate until you got older?
She protected my sense of possibility, and at that time, I saw it more as a constraint, as a challenge, as a restriction, even. But now I see that what she was doing was protecting the space for my sister and I to grow into protecting the opportunities that we had not yet realised that we didn’t even know existed, and making us ready for that moment, for that day when those possibilities would meet us, and we could grow into them and flourish.
What is one thing your mom always says that you used to roll your eyes at — but now find yourself saying too?
My mom used to say, “Everything in its time”. I was very impatient, and still am in a lot of ways as an adult, but I think that she was able to have the foresight. Thanks to her life experiences, the good and the bad times, she was able to have the foresight that, even though myself and my sister, we were eager to have everything at once, that things would happen when they were meant to and in the right way for us. And that’s absolutely what we realized what’s become true for us today.
What is a moment with your mom that you wish you could relive again?
I don’t know if there’s a specific moment, I think it’s those moments of nothing, those moments of nothing, but that means everything. Those moments spent quietly together, those moments spent taking a walk around the neighbourhood, those moments just spent reminiscing and realizing all that we’ve done to get to where we are today. Those are the moments, especially now, as an adult with my own daughter, that I appreciate the most.
What is one thing about your mom that makes her cooler than most people think?
My mom is very quiet. She’s very quiet, but she’s resilient, she’s tough. She doesn’t let a lot show, but when she moves, when she acts, it’s all for the protection of her family. It’s all for the protection of her kids. And this is something that I would say, I see myself as having those positive traits as well.
What piece of advice from your mom do you think every young woman should hear?
Don’t abandon yourself to be accepted. Don’t be accepted or don’t desire to be accepted at the cost of who you are. It’s so critical because when you lose yourself in relationships, in work, in your environment, then you lose the core of who you are. And I think that you can never truly be happy if you abandon yourself for the sake of or because someone thinks you should be a certain way, and that’s something that I’m absolutely grateful that I learned from my mom, and that’s the way that I hope to impart knowledge and guidance to my daughter.
