The warning level for an out-of-control bushfire threatening homes and blocking evacuation routes for residents in Mundaring has been downgraded to a watch and act.

The fire was first reported just after 2pm, sparking an emergency warning for people bounded by Great Eastern Highway, Doconing Road and Old Northam Road in Beechina.

Authorities warned the fire was out of control and moving in a westerly direction, and advised residents it is too late to safely leave.

The warning was downgraded later on Wednesday as the bushfire was stationary, however it was not contained or controlled.

Great Eastern Highway remains closed in both directions between Great Southern Highway and Old Northam Road.

Vision from the scene appears to show an abandoned house and a large shed engulfed by flames, and residents attempting to evacuate their horses as the fire burns close to paddocks.

It is believed to have burned through upwards of 70 hectares. DFES said the cause of the fire was believed to be accidental.

Authorities have warned locals to follow their bushfire safety plans as it burns closer to homes and properties.

As of Wednesday evening, firefighters were strengthening containment lines, while aerial support was stood down for the night.
