After the FBI reported a DNA breakthrough in the case of missing Nancy Guthrie, police have announced they know where the main suspect

Police officers believe they know where clothes worn by a doorbell cam suspect were bought as the search for missing pensioner Nancy Guthrie enters a third week.

The 84-year-old – the mother of US telly star Savannah Guthrie – has not been seen since February 1. The TV anchor has made another plea, telling anyone involved that “it is never too late to do the right thing”. Police are said to have ‘leaned away’ from family involvement as a man hunt is launched after the suspected kidnapping.

Doorbell cam footage from the night she disappeared showed a masked person in gloves appearing to try and interfere with the camera. The FBI have said a glove found near the home appears to match the gloves worn by the person seen in the chilling video.

Now, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos told CBS News that the clothing and face mask worn by the suspect who police are hunting seen were purchased at Walmart. They say the backpack seen was identified as a black Ozark Trail Hiker, which is only sold by the company – but they do not yet know if it was bought in-person or online.

Officers are combing through surveillance footage from local Walmart outlets. Cops have found 16 gloves near the home, mostly belonging to searchers who discarded them. But an FBI spokesperson told Fox News: “The one with the DNA profile recovered is different and appears to match the gloves of the subject in the surveillance video.”

The Today show host Savannah’s fresh plea came a fortnight to the day her beloved mum vabished. She said: “It’s been two weeks since our mom was taken. And I just wanted to come on and say that we still have hope. And we still believe.

“I wanted to say to whoever has her or knows where she is that it’s never too late. And you’re not lost or alone. And it is never too late to do the right thing. And we are here. We believe. And we believe in the essential goodness of every human being. And it’s never too late.”

Police confirmed that the gloves, found in a field near the side of the road about two miles from Nancy Guthrie’s home, have been sent to a private lab in Florida on Friday. Preliminary results have been supplied but not yet but have yet to go into the FBI’s CODIS forensic database, which could flag up a DNA match.

Authorities have said that their suspect is a male of 5ft9in to 5ft10in tall and of an average build. He was seen wearing a black, 25-litre Ozark Trail Hiker Pack backpack at the time. The FBI said: ““We hope this updated description will help concentrate the public tips we are receiving.”

Nancy was last seen by her family on the evening of Saturday 31 January. On Sunday 1 February, in the early hours of the morning, her home’s doorbell camera was disconnected. At the time, software detected a person in front of the camera, but there was no video and Nancy’s subscription wasn’t valid.

Members of her church noticed her absence at Sunday’s service and notified her family. Nancy’s daughter Savannah is the co-anchor of NBC News‘ flagship Today show and NBC News’ chief legal correspondent. She is also a primary anchor for the network’s election coverage.
