Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of Today Show co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, was reportedly missing from her Tucson, Arizona, home since midnight on January 31, 2026 (ET). After a week-long investigation, the FBI shared photos of a masked person of interest, following which rumours were rife that Nancy’s son-in-law, Tommaso Cioni, might be the individual seen in the footage. Notably, a journalist also named him a “prime suspect” in the abduction case. Amid that, the sheriff cleared him alongwith the entire Guthrie family of all charges, leading to reactions from ex-FBI agents and journalists.
Sheriff cleared Tommaso Cioni and other family members of Nancy Guthrie as possible suspects
Pima County Sheriff, Chris Nanos officially cleared Tommaso Cioni and all other members of Nancy Guthrie’s family as suspects in her disappearance on February 16, 2026 (ET). The sheriff’s department released a statement emphasising that they have been 100% cooperative in Nancy’s search process and are considered victims in the case. The clearance covers Nancy’s children, Savannah, Annie, and Camron Guthrie as well as their respective spouses, including Tommaso Cioni and Michael Feldman. The statement could be read as:
“To be clear…the Guthrie family – to include all siblings and spouses – has been cleared as possible suspects in this case. To suggest otherwise is not only wrong, but it is also cruel. The Guthrie family are victims plain and simple…please, I’m begging you the media to honor your profession and report with some sense of compassion and professionalism.”

Former FBI agent warns against the clearance of Nancy Guthrie’s family members as potential suspects
Former FBI Special Agent, Jonathan Gilliam, stated that clearing the Guthrie family in the disappearance of 84-year-old, Nancy Guthrie is “premature,” arguing that investigators cannot definitively rule anyone out without knowing exactly who was in the home at the time of the incident. Jonathan cautioned that the sheriff’s announcement might be “emotional and personal rather than factual,” suggesting that such public declarations could be risky while investigative gaps remain. The Will Cain Show host quoted Jonathan Gilliam as saying:
“Jonathan Gilliam warns that the sheriff’s statement may be emotional and personal rather than factual, and investigators may still lack complete knowledge to definitively clear the family: ‘Unless they know who was in that home… there’s no way to absolutely clear them.'”

Megyn Kelly suspicious regarding the clearance of Nancy Guthrie’s family members as potential suspects
Journalist, Megyn Kelly, expressed scepticism regarding why Pima County Sheriff, Chris Nanos, said “nobody has been cleared”, including Nancy Guthrie’s family members, just a day before changing his statement 360 degrees. She wanted to understand “24 hours later what changed” which led to official clearance of the entire Guthrie family of any involvement in Nancy Guthrie’s abduction. She found it “bizarre” that the clearance notice was dropped before any new update was provided regarding the case.

Megyn Kelly previously noted that authorities had repeatedly interviewed the neighbours of Annie Guthrie and Tommaso Cioni. The questioning seems baseless if the couple were not considered persons of interest. She has publicly theorised that the case is a “murder” rather than a kidnapping, suggesting that alleged ransom notes were likely opportunistic and not from an actual abductor. Amid the theories and official statements, the public still remains suspicious of Tommaso Cioni as Nancy Guthrie’s potential abductor.

Why does the public think Tommaso Cioni is linked with Nancy Guthrie’s kidnapping?
The public suspects Nancy Guthrie’s son-in-law and Annie Guthrie’s husband, Tommaso Cioni, as the abductor. The speculation began after NewsNation journalist, Ashleigh Banfield claimed on her podcast that Tommaso was a “prime suspect,” citing an unverified source. Annie Guthrie and her husband, Tommaso Cioni, are under intense online scrutiny as they were the last people to see Nancy before she disappeared from her Tucson home. Tommaso reportedly drove Nancy home after a family dinner on Saturday night, ET, and confirmed she was safely inside at approximately 9:30 p.m.
